Should have done ED or EA...I didn't, and now I'm paying for it. Could have easily got into Princeton and Columbia too...ugh.

Meh, I think I would have. I have the grades and everything to back it up, and have some connections. I already take classes at Princeton and Columbia, so that helps as well.

meh, if anyone is applying to Brown, I just want to rant about the fact that I have to write 7 essays for just Brown, and I would've had to have written 2 more if I was applying PLME

Starting off writing about where you were born isn't an essay, that sounds like a personal biography... not gonna help you get into ivies.

Write about something your interested in, unless the question is describe your life or something

Just brag about yourself as much as possible, that's the purpose of these college essays. Make yourself sound like the most intelligent but well-rounded and culturally senstive individual ever born.

If you're applying to grad school it's pretty similar with the essays, only you have to make your research sound like the most important research ever doen by man. Little minor things like TAing for a little extra money is written as "I spent three semesters educating our nation's future, tutoring daily, and ensuring that hte university graduated the BEST damned class of physics students that the world has ever seen."

Harvard's admissions officers rank the applications based on how stuck up they sound and SAT scores and GPA. If you have below a 600 on any section, they throw out your application. If your GPA is below an unweighted 3.2, they throw out your application. After that, they go down the list of "most snobby application" and offer acceptance to the snobbiest and just go down the line.

Make it unique and memorable. Entertaining and engaging is always good.

From your original posts it looks like you're starting out with the same crap everyone else does. Don't do it.

Seriously. This is stupid. We're at winter break already. Work harder.

I started in SEPTEMBER of my senior year. I took 7 classes, 1 of which was weight training which involved waking up EARLY 30 minutes to show up for class because it was required. While most seniors didn't have a first period, I had a first period that required showing up early, at 7:05 AM instead of 7:35 AM. Since second period was at 8:25, most people got to sleep in an hour and a half compared to me basically.

In addition to that, I took a junior college class for multivariable calculus that ran from 6 - 8 PM.

I had MIT's EARLY ACTION to worry about due at November 1st. I also had UC apps due at November 30th, USC due on 12/10, StanFUrd due on 12/15, etc etc...

Man, I worked on my essay DAY after DAY after DAY. In the last 2 weeks before my MIT app was due, I was sending in a copy to a friend everyday so I could get revisions back. During the last 2 weeks of UC apps and USC app, I was sending in to that same friend for revisions EVERYDAY as well. I had like 30 word documents of revisions and I had ironed out a flawless application by the time I turned in my StanFUrd crap. So by the time I had to turn in my Georgia Tech and other private school apps in January, I was resting.

Yes I was resting during my break. All I remember doing was copying and pasting in stuff from Word into the "common app" pdf file and getting ready to hit the submit button.

Don't delete anything. Just start typing down anything you can think of, even if you cant think of the word to describe something. When you have a page then go back and edit everything. Thats what i do.

I think I'm going to make an outline and just jot things down for a day or two before I really start to write it, I have until the 1st anyways.

There are only 3 personal statements (academic areas of interest, why interest in Brown, and free-response) + the activities & awards sheet. Where did you pull 7 from?

Penn had 5 for me >_< (what you like to do for fun, which Penn professor to study with, why Penn, "optional" essay, and joint program essay).

lock yourself in a room with nothing but the material the essay is on, a pen, and some paper.

You can't even write the admissions essay. How do you think you're going to survive college?

Shut up about research papers, I have one due at some point. We are supposed to interview people and crap. I think I am horribly screwed so my plan is to find some random people and pretend they know about my topic and make up interviews. I am not entirely sure when it is due either.

But anyway, I had my mom help me, she's a good writer

This is sort of generic, but it always helps me to physically write something out with a pen and paper then type it, as opposed to just typing it. I don't know why, it just helps with everything, from letters to papers to essays.

I've already made it through a bunch of college courses, essays I've had to write then didn't really matter though, because they always involve work and not personal bullshit. That's how I feel about these personal "statements"/essays; they're a load of bull.

I have to start my essays... but meh, 6 days left. Just get out a pen and a paper and don't use a computer, that way you're less likely to delete stuff.
