Local HDD versus 100bt network HDD?

Here's a stumper for everyone: Care to place bets on which would be better for running a Counterstrike server from?

The box is a Celeron 466, 128mb ram.

It has an oldy 4gb 5400rpm IDE drive on its own channel. My machine, connected to the server over a 100bt network, has plenty of spare room on the 7200RPM 40gb ATA66 dedicated pagefile drive on its own ATA66 channel.

Which would produce faster load times? The slow yet local hdd, or the fast yet remote hdd?

Neither. You need a 256MB RAMDrive dedicated to all your CS files.

That doesn't count, haha Actually, with ram so cheap, getting a 1gb server going with ~256 of it ramdrived for all hl files... hmm that's actually kind of practical

But for NOW, I still have to decide if it's worth testing out my theory, or if one option will be better than the other

I'd say the local drive. The 100 megabit connection is gonna max out at 12.5MB/sec, whereas the local drive has a max rate of 33mb/s (for Ultra33, which it won't exceed). Realistically you're not gonna get 33mb/sec from that drive constantly, but you'll almost surely get more the 12.5mb/s.

I agree with MGMorden. I've never tried what you were thinking, running the counterstrike server off a networked hard drive, but on my Celeron 450 Linux computer, it tested at 18.8 MB/s locally (HD Tach in Windows tests the drive at 27 MB/s for average read speed), and can transfer only about 10-11 MB/s over the 10/100 switch I'm using.

Local.. although 100BaseT network has a top speed of 12.5MB/s, but you also need to factor in network overhead and everything..
