SOYO K7VME KM400 - $49
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton Retail - $80 (way way better than Celeron 2.4)
Maxtor 40 GB 7200 RPM - $51.50
Lite-On 52x CD-ROM - $14.50 (slightly faster )
Logitech Keyboard and Mouse combo - $13
NEC 1.44 MB Floppy Drive - $10
Crucial 256MB PC2700 - $48 (double the ram)
Antec SLK1600 case, with 300W power supply - $46

Total: $311.99
S+H to NY: $26.00
Grand Total: $337.99 (plus any applicable taxes)

It's up to you if +$88 and some elbow grease is worth it to you, or if you'd rather save the effort and order the Dell. Actually, and this surprised me, these two configs I'd have to choose the Dell, even if the Dell was $350 with the P4 upgrade. It's just not worth the trouble/lack of support when building such a budget machine. If you're building a powerhouse then by all means do it yourself and you'll save hundreds and you'll know your system inside and out, but for budget rigs the 400SC seems to still be a winner

The Dell config will be hardware tested, and well supported for a year. But the custom one doesn't rip you off for upgrades like Dell does. For example, if you needed a CD-RW/DVD combo Dell would charge you $150 for it, whereas at newegg you can get a Lite-On 48x24x48x16 CDRW/DVD Combo Drive for an extra $29.

What would you choose?

Heh... actually I change my mind... you really can't work with 128 MB of ram, so you're talking at least $450 now for a P4 2.4 upgrade and a 256MB ram upgrade to make the Dell acceptable for any real uses.

Perhaps it'd be best if you got the barebones Dell, then bought whatever upgrades you need from somewhere else, potentially selling the replaced parts in the Dell. You could also call Dell and ask for a better price on some of the upgrades; they may give you a deal if you let them know that you don't think it should cost $100 to replace a 128 MB stick of ram with a 256 MB stick.

After taking off the stuff to bring it down to $350, there is still a link to get $150 back.

That $100 rebate isn't part of the $150 is it?? If so I apologize for being ignorant.

bah this system sucks, dont waste yer money on a celery and 128mb

For $300 to get P4 2.4 w 800 MHz fsb, Mobo, case/PSU, Dell warranty I think it would be worth it. This thing is fully upgradable right, and nothing beats a warranty for your main components. Throw in a good vid card and some non-ECC ram that most people have lying around and you have a pretty mean back up system.

Sad. I got a better deal in September. The prices aren't getting better, are they? Well I'm not sure if it's better but it was the P4 2.8C, and thats pretty much all. No ram, or hard drive but those can be bought separately.
