This thread has been good for laughs...but I cannot understand the fighting!

Fact: the TDK, Iomega, and Plextor 12x10x32 drives are mechanically identical (ok, except for the blue tray -- that's kinda neat); and with a firmware update to Plextor 1.07 and an ID change they are functionally identical. The Sanyo drive has similar specs, but is not mechanically or functionally identical (same firmware doesn't work.)

But who cares? All 4 drives are great; buy the one that's the cheapest if all you need is a bare drive!

Maximum PC rated the TDK package a bit higher than the plextor package because of what is (in their view) superior bundled software. A useful point for someone who 1) doesn't own Nero already and 2) wants to. For the rest of us, as I said, who cares.

Just MHO,
John

the subject of this thread is Plex 12/10/32 vs. TDK 12/10/32; Deals, but i haven't seen any deals for either of these drives. anyone know of any good deals on the tdk at a place where the rebate is honored? i checked a couple of them, and couldn't find it for under $250. anyone else find a better deal?

This is one of the funniest posts I've seen in ages.

OK lets settle that the Iomega and TDK are defintely the same as the Plex. We don't know if the Plex is the same as the Sanyo BP1300. I'm going to say no they're not.

Why?

Let's visit the BURN-Proof website and check the "authorization list."

http://www.ssct.co.jp/bpcenter/en/list.htm

This is a list of drive technology that has been approved to wear the BURN-Proof label. As far as I am concerned this is a list of different hardware designs. And yes you see both the Sanyo and Plextor technology in there.. but not both the Plex and Iomega or TDK.

OK for the short bus crew this means that yes.. the TDK and Iomega are not listed because they are the same as the Plex. The Plex is listed along with the Sanyo BP 1300 because they are NOT the same.

Same goes for the 16x drives. As far as I can see the Plex 16x is also not the same as the Sanyo BP1400.

Hey,

Wouldn't it be great if we could all flash the IDE versions into SCSI version?

This I would like to know as well.. I bought one at BB B&M this weekend (you know gotta love Uncle Sam and it's Tax refund scheme ) plus a KDS 19" monitor, so i'm a happy camper at the moment.

Just would love to see if I can get it any cheaper and price match my local BB (talked to the manager and he said that if I can find ANY product in his sales region, in my case from the NY/CT borders to ME, and can get it shipped from one of those states for less than the in stock BB B&M price, I would get a price match, plus 10 of the difference), that would be rather nice to see if i could get the TDK drive for $200, that would mean an extra 55 dollars in my pocket...

Here is an email I got from TDK customer service about making their CD-RW drives

Quote:

Dear Valued TDK Consumer:

With some products, TDK sources components, like bare drives. All items
that TDK sources meet or exceed specifications set by TDK for high quality
performance. TDK drives have added software and hardware to enhance our
models. Often the TDK models outperform the competitors models made by the
same sourcing manufacturer.

Thank You
Customer Services Department
TDK Electronics Corporation.

Folks, this is proof beyond a reasonable doubt, that TDK does in fact source parts for their drives. They do not manufacture all parts. They could put a stupid little circuit, or LED and say they made it when in fact they didn't build anything. They assembled the parts made by someone else.

Iomega does the same thing!!!!! I own a rebadged plextor from Iomega,, thank you very much.

LoL this is getting out of hand LoL

Here is one thing we all know : Most PC share the same types, brand and specs of components.

So are you all saying that your Gateway is a rebaged DELL? Or your Micron, hmm even your IBM is a DELL? So we all got a DELL Thank you very much LoL

OOH OOH I KNOW I KNOW....umm...yeah i know the answer to the question of what TDK makes for the drive...they make that cool blue tray and the front panel, therefore "manufacturing" thier own drive. ok, at least it sounded plausible at first...

ATTENTION MORONS:

if you want to find out once and for all which is rebadged and which is the real deal, open the mofo up, take some pictures and compare. There! easy! And don't whine to me if it screws up and voids your warranty.

namura, not ONE person here has said that the TDK IS NOT A PLEXTOR except for you. it's not because they are blind either. many people have flashed the BIOS with plextor bioses and it works fine, showing that it is plextor hardware. no one has every said "hey, i tried it and it doesn't work!!!" i do not see why you're constantly talking about it not being a plextor. countless countless people have said that it is a plextor and have done steps showing that it is indeed one, including contacting the TDK about who makes it. that's like telling me that my name isn't atriumbruin.

maybe tdk does in fact use some sanyo drives in other cases, but it's pretty clear that this 12/10/32 one is made by plextor.

edit:
hmm, namura, i believe i see your argument in that they are the same drive, but they are not necessarily plextors. or if it is a plextor, you're saying that plextor outsourced it from sanyo? well, from what everyone has been saying, it is indeed a plextor and perhaps this issue should be dropped from here.
