locked NAV screens while driving

I know Lexus does this - anyone else? With so many manufacturers building screens into their consoles, this has to be a growing concern. I'm fine with using it but you just never know about others. Kind of a catch-22. Almost as dangerous as dialing your phone while driving.

There are a lot of people who favor portable GPS also, but reaching over for that thing (like I have also done) is just as dangerous as checking a cell phone.

Easily bypassed if you wish.

Most of them use the VSS signal to determine if the car is moving.

IMO, if the sensor is tripped for the passenger airbag to turn on, you should have access to the screens.

i had to hack my lexus, cut some wires and join new ones, to fool the system. even with passenger, we could not change destination while in motion.

Aftermarkets are setup for the lockout too. If professionally installed usually they have to set them up with the safe guards.

I had a pioneer double din touch screen in my last car, me and my bro installed it and setup a bypass button to fool it. its pretty common.

This should do this with cellphones if anything. It isn't people typing in their GPS that are weaving all over trying to run me off the road most of the time.

Ford Escape locks new location but you can still use your address book.

My car locks out address input while moving, but the voice commands and other functions are still available.

The last Kenwood headunit I had could easily defeat this by grounding the parking brake lead off the back of the radio. It's like they didn't even try to make it difficult.

There's a diagnostics mode that the GPS in my dad's Lexus can be put into so you can enter a new destination while driving. The only problem is you need to enter that mode every time you start the car and it has to be done while the car is stopped so he only uses it on long trips.

Ford Sync prevents you from typing in a new address while moving, but you can still select from the address book, POI's, or use the voice activated features to select a destination. The latter works pretty well but IMO it's just as distracting to concentrate on selecting from a list than typing it in anyways.

I have a Kenwood double din navigation unit in my car.. There's a setting somewhere to disable the locked screen which is easily found. Then when you start the car and switch to navigation, it'll prompt a disclaimer or something before using. No special tricks or anything.

subaru locks you out, can't even change songs on my ipod while the car is moving.

It's easy to bypass by tripping the emergency brake sensor on the unit, but I haven't gotten around to opening up the dash to make the hack though.

A modern canbus type vehicle should be using the VSS signal over the bus to lock the radio when in motion. My radio even displays the VSS reading in it's engineering menu.

my droidX sits in its dock on the dash and isnt locked out at all. i can even watch netflix while i drive :sneaky:

and the bypasses exist, pro installers will do it for a nominal fee.

Even the non nav radios with hard drives will lock you out of typing a song name to search or loading music or pics while in motion.

I noticed that when driving a buddy's 2007 F150. I understand why they do it but doesn't it defeat the purpose and functionality of the NAV system in the first place? Stupid fucking lawyers. That is who you have to thank.

You can still do the voice activated NAV commands in Chrysler products. You can say the address.

my 2007 honda system does not lock out at all. But i've mostly switched to using my phone because it does google maps does traffic rerouting.
