My mom tells me about this email she got today and I needed to try it and it did work.

If you have a newer car with key fobs, heres a couple of easy steps.

1. If your other fob is home and someone might be there, call their cell phone.

2. tell them to get your fob

3. next, you need to point your phone towards your car and have them press the unlock button on the other fob.

4. it might take a few tries but it will work. Took 3 times to get mine unlocked

This was posted on here last week too. It doesn't work. Car remotes don't work via high pitched sounds... they use radio frequencies. (Totally different kinds of waves -- pressure vs. EM.)

EDIT: And just to be clear, your cell phone's microphone won't pick up RF signal (nor will its speaker transmit it).

Because people want it to work even though there are about 10 technical reasons as to why it wouldnt be remotely possible

So your car has a microphone installed on the door handle?

Seriously... Your cell phone puts out a sound (pressure) wave, and your car remote puts out RF, which is an EM wave

The pressure wave isnt going to be picked up by the receiver in the car. Not only that, but even if the cell phone could output RF, the frequencies used would be filtered out by the DSP of the cell phone which filters for voice frequencies.

In lesser news old garage door openers didn't use scrambling. You could just go around with a frequency swapping device and open peoples doors.

that is true.

And you can change the channel on really old televisions by playing with a metal slinky.

Yep, that *is* true - I remember reading a warning in our owner's manual when we got ours about the possibility of other people opening our garage door (or opening other garage doors with our remote).

Come on loki. The fob is the plastic thingamajiggey that you hold that has buttons on it that you press to lock and unlock your car. Most have a panic button and a 'pop the trunk' button.
