i was checking out the network settings (was on the ethernet at my college untill june after which i was forced to switch to 56k) on my 'puter which is running on win98se, didnt change anything, clicked the ok button, for some reason windows felt it nessisary to create a driver info database eventhough nothing had been changed. eversince strange things have been going wrong. the comp gets to the shutdown screen then just sticks there, till i hit the reset button. also, it now thinks the default mp3 player is some imaginary program called "program.exe" which it is obviously unable to find. any help would be greatly apreciated

make sure you don't have any sounds set for shut down. go to control panel and set none for shut down sound. win 98 hatesa this.

Do a google search (www.google.com) on: "windows 98" shutdown .
. You will find a link to the MS Troubleshooting Shutdown Prblms for Win 9x/Me. Also a link to another page that has a large amount of info on shutdown problems. Print them both out and read. Your punishment for using MS software...

Sounds like a IRQ problem....pull your ethernet card if your not using it now and free up the IRQ..when and if you go back to college reinstall the ethernet card and pull the modem out. Put the modem into the slot that the Ethernet card was using and see if this corrects your hanging up problem. May be best to pull both cards out remembering what slot the ethernet was using....then restart your computer with both cards removed, after it is fully loaded shut it back down and install the modem card into the slot where the ethernet card was. Remember to pull the power cord out from the back before removing or installing cards! Hope this helps
