Here's what happened.

You didn't get an estimate in writing.

The locksmith sized you up as an easy score. Someone who has money and wouldn't put up a fight.

They picked a sky high number (in case you did end up haggling), but you paid it.

Basically yes. This kind of thing happens all the time, you sign up for a cell phone, the ad says 200, but when you go to get the phone you have to pay an activation fee, pay extra for data services, etc.

Even sadder is the time it took for the locksmith to come to your place and do his thing, you probably only saved a hour at most compared to going back to the gym to get your keys.

Hard.

OP, you ought to make a spare set of keys that you give to a trusted person who lives nearby... a friend and/or your super. Or hell, even if you hid it in a nearby park or something, it'd be a lifesaver if a situation like this ever came up again.

My wife went away for vacation this week, and it occurred to me that my mother-in-law is the only person with a spare key to my house. :Q I think about that every time I walk out the door.

If Christopher Walken can hide a watch surely KingGheedora can hide a tiny little key.

Or get one of these. Pricey, but less than a 3rd of the rape-age OP experienced.

Is that a real Rolex?

It's a Romex, just as good.

Come over to my van and take a look at these Sorny Blew-Ray players and these awesome Pamasonic LSD screen TV's.

I still don't get why you didn't go back to the gym and get your keys. Even once I heard the initial $85, I'd have went back to the gym and returned unless it was several hours away which doesn't make sense given its your gym. And hell, had I decided to not go back and accept the $85 to come over, as soon as the asshole checked it out and uttered "plus $420 to..." I'd say "sorry to waste your time, here's the $85 for coming" and went to the gym no matter what.

It would have taken me around four hours round trip to go back and get my keys. My keys are in my gym bag at my office, which is an hour away when the trains are running normal time, but at night the line near me slows to a crawl at this time of night (i got home at 10:45pm). I have to transfer two times, which also adds more wait.

When you need a locksmith, you REALLY need a locksmith. The locksmith knows this.

So highway robbery is very much legal. I'd locked myself out in the past, it was expensive to get a locksmith, but over $600 is insane.

I don't think he wants to shove a key up his ass every day. :Q

I was locked before in college and when I called the locksmith maybe a mile away from me they told me somewhere around $250. I ended up kicking the back door in.

Why not take a taxi? Probably would have been cheaper than getting ripped off by the locksmith.
