The OP also ran the risk of getting his place broken into if he told them no.
Op: $420?!? No way, Im going back to the gym to get my keys?
Russian Jew: Why are we here if you know where your keys are?
Op: Because it's going to take me 2-4 hours to go get the keys!
Russian Jew: Ohhhh okay! <smirk>

Here's what happened.
You didn't get an estimate in writing.
The locksmith sized you up as an easy score. Someone who has money and wouldn't put up a fight.
They picked a sky high number (in case you did end up haggling), but you paid it.
I got owned.

Hard.
OP, you ought to make a spare set of keys that you give to a trusted person who lives nearby... a friend and/or your super. Or hell, even if you hid it in a nearby park or something, it'd be a lifesaver if a situation like this ever came up again.

Anyone else feel like the OP really needs a hug after all this? I feel sorry for the poor bastard.
What was that movie where the kid was kinda "challenged" and he had to keep a spare key in his shoe? That's pretty much me. kinda "challenged."

I still don't get why you didn't go back to the gym and get your keys. Even once I heard the initial $85, I'd have went back to the gym and returned unless it was several hours away which doesn't make sense given its your gym. And hell, had I decided to not go back and accept the $85 to come over, as soon as the asshole checked it out and uttered "plus $420 to..." I'd say "sorry to waste your time, here's the $85 for coming" and went to the gym no matter what.

OP think you need FOX5 on your side. THey have that "investigative" reporter that harasses people until they refund the money.
Something similar almost happened to me. I had a window chipped by a rock on the car. My deductible is $500 so I figured why bother with the insurance. The price they quoted me was 4x what they quoted for the insurance company. SO I went through the insurance and they waived the deductible. Apparently it's pretty common for insurance companies to waive it when it's a low price repair but you wouldn't know that unless it happens to you or you hear about it. Live and Learn.

anyone mention that he should have stayed at a hotel or hired a taxi to get his keys back?

self ownage of the year
1) leaving keys at work, a 1-2 hour subway trip away
2) calling locksmith instead of having a spare key hidden
3) agreeing to $600+ locksmith service instead of hailing a taxi for <$100 roundtrip or staying at motel6 for $125
4) posting about it on ATOT

OP, on a more serious note, this place sounds VERY shady. If I were you, I'd change out the lock they put in there. Who knows if they have a master key or something and can come by and easily rob you when you're not around. This is just a bad situation. Changing a lock isnt hard - get one from Home depot or Lowes and change it yourself. The extra $100 will be worth it for the peace of mind
edit: but then again, they are locksmiths. IF they wanted to rob you, they could get in there, their lock or not

If they had to drill out the locks in the first place, they obviously aren't very GOOD locksmiths.
