depends on locks more than anything, but rare to find at the residential level. I am sure some have unpickable locks out there.

also to others above questioning money on someone...you'd be surprised how much cash those considered poor keep on them. Our Guatemalan community keeping our polo fields and crops all nice and neat are constantly robbed because being illegal they can't get a bank account and don't trust their shared communal living arrangements.

Something similar almost happened to me. I had a window chipped by a rock on the car. My deductible is $500 so I figured why bother with the insurance. I don't mean to paint it as south central LA, but it's not exactly a place in the suburbs all quiet. My wife is from there... seen it all... her street is somewhat better but even there some guys broke her brother's car window to steal a GPS, then they left stuff of his at his front door to taunt him.

About having cars there, people in Brooklyn drive them once a week, if that... they also have to get up early and move them once a week to the opposite side of the street for sweeping... not really worth it.

heh u can always block an open with with some 2x4's/plywood and carriage bolts made into a wood clamp type thing... be more secure than a window
but yea if there were bars that wouldn't work.

still, not much stands up to a saw let alone a self powered one if you have the time lol

Is it not clear from my explanation about it taking 4 hours round trip on the New York subway to get my keys at that time of night, that I don't have a car? I may be stupid, I may have gotten shafted to the max, but not so stupid that if I had car keys I wouldn't have slept in my car, or gone back to work to get my house key. I just got taken advantage of when I was in a desperate position.

Likewise with the hotel comments, it's a lot different when you're in the situation. Maybe you guys don't understand what it's like to live in NY. Most people don't have cars, in my neighborhood there aren't hotels, cabs don't drive around for you to flag them down on any corner in Brooklyn, and after a long day at work, when it's 11pm you don't want to go running all the way back to work and then come back and go to sleep at 4am when you have to work the next day, having projects that need to get done.

Uhh, this is normal for NYC. The price is not that high, really. Especially for late at night. If you call and schedule an apointment during the daytime non-emergency service, yes, the rates are lower. But at 11 p.m. to get a locksmith to come and do it is big bucks. Welcome to reality in the city.

You guys living down the street from stripmall USA shithole wounldn't get this. . .

I've had my locks drilled in the middle of the night in NYC, and 600+ is absurd. I dont know what world your from where 600 is the norm.

This reminds me of the only time I've been locked out. I was living in an apartment in rural Shanghai, at the very end of my study abroad, and went to take out the garbage. Well, the apartment door locked automatically. Very luckily, I had my wallet and cell phone on me. I called the program administrator (who answered her phone after a couple tries--they don't have VM)..she got in touch with another student, who got directions to the landlord's house across town (Chinese google maps!), and we went in a cab over to that guy's apartment across town. I think I was out about $30 USD (for cab ride), but would have gladly paid 2x that!

The apartment I just moved out of had something very similar to this. I loved it! Never used a real key for 6 months (my Lexus is keyless entry/start, stays in pocket/bag), and to get into work its RFID.

I'm still not understand WHY you guys have to have a lock DRILLED out?? I'd consider myself as a novice lockpicking-wise (I understand the concept very well just out of practice). It takes me about 2 minutes to open a standard schlage deadbolt. I would imagine a locksmith should be able to pop it right open.


Why are you letting someone drill out a lock? There's no reason for it unless it's damaged in some way where the cylinder doesn't turn.

So uhh, you managed to call a locksmith, but you couldn't call a cab?
