Ok I have tried EVERYTHING. Blizzard should know me by name by now...I have only contacted them 10+ times. I thought I would post and see if anyone out there might have some advice. Heres the specs on what I have and what I have done:

My system:
2.5GHz PentIV
1024 Ram
128 GeForce 5900
Im connected to RR, highspeed connection (not wireless)

I have Winxp Pro with all the updates and service packs
I have directx9.0c
I have the latest Nvidia drivers
I have updated the latest drivers through Intel
Basically i have done everything and anything Blizzard suggests..including getting rid of CTMod, renaming the 3 folders (WTF WDB and interface)..also tried deleting them and patching them in.

The only thing I havent tried is reloading the PC which I really dont want to do. But no matter what I do Im getting lock ups at the character select at times, zoning in from a death or instance, and even when im traveling along in third person view. I understand that there will be hiccups in Ironforge, which I obviously get, but this happens actually in other zones that are less populated. Any ideas as to what I can do next to try?

I'm sure it has little to do with WoW, and more to do with bad RAM, weak power supply, faulty HD, etc. Try replacing each part if you can, and see if your lockups go away.

I would start with the RAM, because I bet WoW is your most RAM-hungry application, exercises more bits than anything else, thereby exposing the fault y segment. You could probalby even remove one stick at a time and see if that solves anything.

Also, try some RAM-testing software. I had lockups before and it turned out I have a bad RAM slot on my MB (any stick there returns thousands of errors, but not if you move it to another slot.)

1) Are you overclocking anything?
2) Have you tried rolling your video drivers BACK?
3) Do you expereince lock-ups in anything else besides WoW?

The crazy thing is I ran EQ2 and Doom3 with NO problems whatsoever. These two games from what I have heard from others locked up their machines and had trouble with. I dont overclock my PC, so I know thats not the case.

Yeah, there are a lot of problems with stuff like that. It might not seem like a lot of players, but I mean you have what, hundreds of thousands of people so it doens't look like much, but it is a fair amount.

I don't play any longer and had no problems when I did, but my brother has some similar problems. What happens to him is if he completes a quest, WoW actually drops his internet connection. I've no clue how its possible, but he has to unplug/replug cable modem. He also just received a new pc and for the first 3 weeks couldn't play on it. When he logged on, everything showed as unknown entity and it would crash his internet connection after 30-45 seconds. He contacted support a ridiculous amount of times and they never gave him a solution other than what they also gave you. All of a suddent though, it started working sometimes, but not always.

I tried more than they gave for advice, added port tunneling, stuck the pc on the DMZ on the router, opened basically every port the game needs (and more... ranged +-1000 on each)... anything really that I thought would help the game but it still didn't improve.

There are a lot of speculation with these problems and the ones you're having. Some think that there is a gamefile that is just too large and when you are receiving datae, it eventually crashes on you as it can't receive everything properly.

Not really related I guess, but it's just to say that it's probably the game and not your pc.

I get random lock up too and it always when I accessing something that needs to connect to the database behind the servers. I.E. Quests, Bank, Bags, Trainers, & Auction House. After crashing I have trouble logging back in for five to ten mintues.

Not to mention the few times I died because of lag.

The last GM mentioned reloading the game under a different directory and also trying to run the game in a window. I think running in a window will not make the game look very great, but it may help with having to cold boot everytime i lock up.

1-nope never overclocked
2-nope
3-no problems in games as mentioned before, I was playing doom3 and EQ2 both on my system with zero issues, both being equal or more of a memory haug than WoW imo

I think it's just WoW. I get lockups too.
I overclock, but am:
Prime 95 stable for at least 48 hours
Memtest stable for 50+ passes
Rolled back OC to normal and notice no difference
Tried all Catlysts from 4.10-5.3
No other games or events lock my system

No differencefrom lowering speeds to or below stock speeds (PC3200 RAM to 166 MHz, CPU back down to 1800 MHz)
For me sometimes WoW will crash, sometimes it will go into 'slideshow' mode (play for 5 seconds pause for 20 or so, play for 5 seconds, pause for 20 or so...), and rarely it will totally freeze my system.

WoW just seems unstable to me.

A lot of times when my game crashes Ill hear the sounds and music and can move the hand cursor around and then it disappears. I notice that if i try hitting escape, it sounds like the menu is coming up, though i do not see it come up on my screen due to the freeze.

try turning off sound. I used to have a problem with bad sound drivers killing diablo2 and everquest.

It might also be your ram or motherboard. memtest86 can't find everything. I was getting bad artifacting in wow, and it went away with a new motherboard.

Sad to see so many people having problems with the game, its great when it works! At any rate, one of my guildies has that issue with completing quests. Every time he turns in a quest he gets dumped offline and has to reboot to get back on. I have no idea how that could be possible, but he's not the only one I've heard of having the issue.

I had a couple problems with freezing, the game would freeze, but I would be able to alt-tab and hear sounds and everything, but it didn't help since the picture onscreen was frozen and would kick out to desktop when I alt-tabbed. I rolledback my video drivers to the nvidia 63.xx something ones and everything has been peachy. I've also found that this version of drivers create no lag when alt-tabbing in and out of game.

Where can I find the older drivers? Do you have a link?

Yep, that happens to me all the time as well.

This was happening to me, but only in Ratchet and this was in early December. I believe the fix was to Disable/Enable Checksum from your internet connection settings. Obviously I am not a computer genius and unfortunately I can't remember exactly what needed to be done, however, hopefully this jogs someone elses memory who can provide a clearer fix. In fact I know the entire fix was posted somewhere in a thread in this particular forum, and more recent than December.

Also, I used to have random freezes within the first 2 weeks of playing too. An above poster is hesistant to reinstal the game, but that is what fixed it for me. I still occasionally get a total lock-up, but only once a week or so, instead of a couple times a day.
