I was in my local GoodGuys in search of an HDTV with a PC connection (VGA) in the back and this was all they had. I was told DVI-HDTV doesnt work with PC's. It was 1599 on a clearance sale down from like 3000. Has anyone ever heard of Loewe. From what I know they come from England. Is this deal hot or not?

If it's an LCD, then it's hot! If it's a plasma, then it's not too hot. I think LCD's are better than plasma cause you don't have to worry about burn in problem and lcd's are great in bright rooms cause they generally are brighter. The only drawback is that the black are generally not as black.

He said that it is currently on clearance for $1599. Originally it was for $3000.

Are you sure that the 42" for 2999.99 is an HDTV LCD? Usually, that's EDTV plasma prices.

You don't have to go to ChinaTown, because Gateway is selling their 42" plasma for $2499.

Not many people have heard of Loewe because not many people buy outside of consumer-level A/V. The dealer I bought my TV from says they produce some of the best screens on the market; to illustrate, their larger-sized screens are not flatscreens because the optics at that scale distort the picture, and the company is intent on providing the best picture quality possible.

Loewe is a popular brand in Europe. And I think this is a CRT tube display.

I was personally going to buy a Loewe Aconda 38" widescreen, but I fell in love with the Fujitsu 50" plasma. Quite a difference in price, but I'm saving my pennies...

I'm also curious about the answer to this - I was reading through Sony's manual for their latest digital(?) tube 32" ($1300 @ Best Buy I believe). It has a memory stick and DVI input. There was very little info on the DVI in, and it seemed to only be for hooking up an HD box for receiving HD signals, also saying that it was not usable with PC's.

Has anyone tried hooking a PC up to one of these? Which LCD's, plasma's, or Digital CRT tube's CAN you hook up PCs to?

You'll only find Loewe TVs generally in your high end stores. Their a German manufacturer and make some beautiful TVs. I'd check out AVS forum to get a better idea if this particular model is worth having. It's a 30" CRT based model but not of the quality most people are used to seeing.

Loewe is one of the best TV brands. It is mostly known in Europe but some high end models are sold in the US.

The DVI HDTV signal has different timing from PC DVI resulutions, i.e. 720p vs 1024x768. Sometimes you can match it by using PowerStrip but it is somewhat tricky. Odd that this TV does not accept PC resulotions. I would check on Loewe's web site, http://www.loewe.de/cda/frameset/0,2206,ge-en-fl11-0,00.html

For those that aren't familiar with Loewe, I'm looking at two of them right now (at work), and they really are some of the best pictures on the market. like someone's mentioned before, they're a German company typically found in higher end stores. They don't make anything other than CRTs, but they do it exceptionally well. $1599 is a pretty damn good price, but it'll depend on the line and model.

If you click on specs for any of the TV's you'll get this:

Video Display Input Modes
15 Pin Sub-D (PC VGA) ----- VGA,640 x 480p (60 Hz)PC
Component and 15 Pin Sub-D ----- 480p (31.5 KHz) | 1080i /540p (33.75 KHz)

You guys crack me up. Loewe is extremely high end, but you have probably never heard of them because they are usually at specialty stores. Sorry, you won't find them at Newegg or Compgeeks.

The Loewe (Pronounced Loo-vah) Aconda is one of the finest direct-view sets available. It has an amazing DCDi deinterlacer built in, something few sets lack, which gives a very fluid, natural motion to HD images. IMO it's not worth the $3000 but many places are clearing them out for half the price to make way for newer models.

I have that TV and I was bummed when I read that in the manual. I have however found numerous people who have done it without problems. I have my dvi cable here but haven't taken the time to try it. I don't really need it anymore since I got the $50 direct tivo a couple of months ago. I think I got most of my info on avs forums in the home theater PC section. As stated earlier power strip or similar program is required. It was available on rage3d.com I haven't been there for a while. There is another good source of info at the rage3d forums.
