The police report said an officer parked in his patrol car just after 2 a.m. Saturday observed Tatupu driving a 2006 Hyundai in excess of 50 mph in a 35 mph zone on a main city street and making erratic lane changes without signaling.

He signed a $42 million contract in March and he drives a Hyundai? A Hyundai? I know that lots of rich guys eschew the $200k super cars but a Hyundai?

So what if he drives that? I think you'll be disappointed with the cars some billionaires drive.

Being rich doesn't mean you NEED an expensive car, or even a car at that.

If I were rich, I"d invest it, buy a nice house, and for travel, I'd have a personal limo. I hate driving, I'd rather pay someone to drive me if I were rich

Tis a shame, he does a lot for the community. Everyone makes mistakes, hopefully he gets it together sooner rather than later.

Burn.

And I agree, that's kind of an odd choice. Yeah, plenty of rich people drive sensible cars, but professional athletes aren't your ordinary rich people. This is like a 10 year old getting his grubby mitts on a bunch of rare Pokemon cards and then still only using his stupid Squirtle to fight battles with.

Right? Kids still play with Pokemon cards, don't they? Feel free to interchange that analogy with one that makes sense. Dammit I'm old.

stealth wealth would be one reason.
perhaps some would see excessive spending on such things as vulgar and irresponsible as well...
but that view would be undercut by his drunk driving

a car is simply a tool that gets you from point A to point B faster then walking
an 200K$ car does that no better then a Hyundai

I drive a POS Hyundai Elantra because it is good for the environment. More expensive cars are 'more expensive' largely due to fact that they cost more to manufacture (duh... right?).

What folks don't seem to realized is that most all of the added manufacturing cost is added energy cost... i.e. extra coal, oil, and gas that has to burned to make your car.

So... in a nutshell... it is really better for the environment as a whole to buy a 15k car that gets 30 mpg than a 35-40k car that get 40-45 mpg. Over the total life-cycle of the car (manufacture and driving use), the cheaper car requires a lot less energy than the expensive car.

Wow. Do you know anything about cars at all?

I'll give you a recent real world example: I picked up my uncle for dinner the other night. Due to some inattention by him, he ended up directing me to turn down a street he avoids because of speed bumps. In his crappy Tarus wagon, each speed bump is a bit of torture on him and his car (so he literally drives around that street on a daily basis). However, in my car, you hardly feel the speed bumps and street avoidance was not necessary.

That is just a very small, trivial difference between a crappy cheap car and a nicer car. And I am sure "an 200k$ car" probably makes my car feel like a crappy Tarus.
