Nice review. I'm happy with my MX700 though and will probably be sticking with it until the day it dies - I would be much more inclined to get a G7 if they hadn't dropped that second side button (which I use a LOT). But aside from that, it sounds like a very nice mouse.

How's the texture of the G7 compared to the G5?

I found the G5 very hard to grip, and I didn't care for the material the part of the mouse you grip is made of.

If the G7 is made of the same more slippery material, I'll probably have to pass. I much prefer the rubbery grip of the MX510 that I use now.

The only rubber part on the G7 is the wheel. The entire mouse is smooth lacquer like finish. Very similar to feel and weight of MX518 shell. Mine is purple unlike the pictures showing a greenish color. Finish is like the chameleon green razer.

I have all of the following mouses (well they are not expensive to collect).
and I think, for myself, I like the 510 the most currently:
-BEST-
> MX510 (can have better mouse feet)
> MX500 (same problem with 510)
> MX518 (accidentially hit the dpi change button always)
> MX700 (obviously less accurate than MX500)
> MX1000 (weird feeling and obviously less accurate)
> Razer Diamondback Plama (too small)
> generic mouse
> some other generic mouse
> MX900 (worse mouse ever)
-WORST-
I never use any of those side buttons or extra features of these mouses.

seems that the G7 is a great cordless mouse to buy, but I still can't stand that green color.

The battery life is about a day with lots of use. Not a problem since it takes a few seconds to switch them.

This could be why. That's the reason why the mouse is so smooth! Typical USB mice poll at 125 cps and PS/2 can be set to 200 cps. This one is going much faster.

In Planetside, I had both side buttons mapped, I mapped both scroll directions, AND the buttons in front and behind the scroller. I still needed more.

Now that I use an MX, I lost use of the two buttons around the scroller. There's no way I'm losing another.

The spec's on the G7 Look great! But it is wireless accross USB. I like my mice wired to a PS/2 port I honestly can feel the differance between 125Hz on USB and 200-210Hz on PS/2. Also PS/2 does not have all of the overhead that usb requires and thus adding to increased latency when playing a game or general photoshop work.

I won't touch a mouse that doesn't have at least 2 side buttons. And no, horizontal scrolling doesn't make up for this unless you have 8 inch long thumbs. MX1000 is still king of the hill for gaming.

Say what you like but when you actually use it you would see it's different.

I had a MX1000 and thought its response was terrible in comparison. I used a MX518 for games for this very reason. With the G7 I can have the best of both worlds. I actually prefer the single button on the left.

My G7 is coming in tomorrow, I see lots of mixed opinions, but from anyone who has actually tried it I hear nothing but great things. My guess is either A) it really is amazing, or B) ppl just dont want to admit its not that great now that they spent the $100. Based on the fact that I haven't seen bad reviews im thinking it really is just that much of a kick ass mouse. I suppose I'll see come tomorrow afternoon when it arrives.

I still use a regular Microsoft Intellimouse for gaming. I cant stand Wireless when it comes to gaming. I dont like having any loss at all playing twitch fps games like CSS.

Also, Wireless mouses are too heavy for me in twitch games. Aiming is more accurate with a lighter mouse.

All i can say though, is that i own an MX1000, and i used it for 3 minutes before throwing it back in its case and in the closet. I absolutely hated it. WAY too big and heavy. Response was pathetic as well.

Wireless just doesnt add up to wired mice for me when it comes to gaming and response time is critical. Plus.. i'd go through batteries like nobodies business. I almost live on my computer since i game all day.

The 2.4gHz provides on par response. There hasn't been lag in wireless mice for some time now. And the G7 has 2 rechargable/hot swappable batteries so you dont run out of batteries and it doesnt go dead on you during a game and you having to put it on its cradel.

I bought the G7 last week and returned it this week. I'll tell you why: SINGLE THUMB BUTTON! I thought I could live without it in web browsing, but I found myself going for it time and time again. The lack of a rubberized side grip I could live with since its contour lends itself to a good grip. The useless side scrolling made the wheel feel cheap and flimsy. I use autoscroll if I need to scroll side to side. It's much easier to click down than to move my middle finger laterally. Maybe it'd be different if I scrolled with my index finger.

One thing I absolutely loved was the batteries. Having a fully charged spare on hand is an awesome idea. More importantly, they were LIGHT, bringing the total weight of the mouse to within 15 grams of my MX510. I also dig the wireless receiver that you can easily take with you - great for traveling.

It's just too bad about the thumb button. They really had a good thing going.

Why didn't you customize the middle button to be your foward & backward button(as well as open/close if you push it) for your web browser. You can customize buttons for individual aps, and while I still keep the side button as my back button, once I got used to it being set up that way it is actually faster than using two side buttons. It's all about setting up something that makes sense and then taking the time to get used to it. All you have to do is sweep your finger over the button one way or the other, with minimal precision and it goes foward or back.

I just bought this mouse, and i have to agree with the OP, very smooth mouse

Just played BF2 with it, I notice the difference right away, but for $100, it is very pricey, but for me, worth it. I just wish Logitech would make a wireless desktop combo with this mouse.. it would be perfect. But knowing them, they probably will in the futuere and i'll have to sell this mouse and get it...
anywho..

2 'design' problems I don't like about my G7:

1) WHY the f0ck is the dam mouse button so HIGH up on it?! Should be lower down...it is giving me pains on the top of my hand

2) The lack of 2nd button to the left hand side of the mouse SUCKS.

I can change the scroll up and down buttons for speed to be made to be FORWARD but this means I can't adjust the speed as it won't 'cycle' through the speeds. It will stop once at the bottom = ghetto.

It is much sharper and smoother then my MS Wireless Intellimouse explorer. That had 2 buttons on the left for forwards and backwards.

Yes I realise I can use side scroll click left and right for fwd and bck but it isn't the same..

not to mention the buttons near the wheel are now in the wrong place..should flank the wheel like in previous mx mice grr sure the mx mice had that 3rd uselessly far back button but atleast the other two were reachable...i think they nerf their mice sometimes on purpose so their next release can be better.

I'll see how my hand feels. The top of the dam hand feels sore. Like a dull ache from the crappy position of the mouse . Kind of how my arms felt when I learnt to type properly but they got use to it and it is fine now.

WHY logitech?!

wow so many people whining about that second button, I also was use to it on my MX500. And I went to the G5. You know what my fix was, just use the forward button my keyboard.
Are u guys using 1984 keyboards. Such a minor issue, yet all this crying. Both of the G series are great mouses.

WHY can't I just not use my hand and use my right hand to use the button if it was there? It would make it much better for me.
