$70 Logitech Harmony 880 Universal Remote

This is one of the most popular universal remotes and alot of people say the Harmony 880 kicks major ass. I saw this on slickdeals and people on the current 10 page thread there are commenting they are receiving them brand new in the Logitech box, so you don't have to worry about it being a broken refurbished remote. Somebody suggested they might have had a charging issue so the stock was pulled, the problem fixed, and now they are reselling them as refurbished. The price of $70 cannot be beat, I checked eBay to see what they were selling for and they were around $80 for a used one.

There are two other Logitech remotes that are very popular, but the 880 is the best for the money, the Logitech Harmony 890 is a good amount of money more then the 880 and the only difference is it has a wireless receiver that it sends RF commands to, which then blast infared signals to the components, that way you can point your remote anywhere and do not have to point it directly at whatever you want to control, or if you have all your AV equipment behind something like cabinets and still want the IR signal to reach. The Logitech 890 is a good chunk of money more and you only get an IR extender, but you can buy the cheaper 880 and then buy a better IR extender for much cheaper. The newer Logitech Harmony One has a touch screen, but it is fairly expensive.

$70 for the 880 is a great deal

An IR extender for anybody that might want one - Terk Technologies LF-IRX Leapfrog Remote Control Extender

Ya this deal has been on and off for 6 months or so. I snagged one back in November and have been very happy with it. I hate the shape and input selection and activities buttons are a bit far off from where your palm rests, but overall its a great universal remote system that is easily customized.

I bought one of these a year or two back. I just didn't like it. I didn't feel it was easy to use or program, and if you are depending on your wife or girlfriend to get the hang of it, forget it. I think universal remote controls need to evolve much futher than this before they will become a worthwhile investment.

It can't be that hard to use and learn, 1,622 reviews on amazon.com give it an average of 4 stars out of 5, newegg reviews give it the same as well. Of course, some things do not come easy for some people.....we like to call them special

I bought a Logitech 550 when they were 50 shipped from Amazon last year. Well worth it. It works well and it has displaced 4 other remotes. No way, am I ever going back to that mess again.

I know. After you have one of these you kick yourself for having waited so long. I swear, if my house was on fire, I'd save the Harmony and my TiVo.

BTW - for anyone who thinks it is just too much for a woman, I'm a grandmother and I programmed it all and I redo it when we have equipment changes.

I have an 880 and paid a bit more for it. I'd have to agree with some of the button layout issues and some of the annoying default settings, as well as how often it falsely registers a successful function. I really dislike the small buttons on the side of the LCD screen that you end up using for so much functionality.

It's a decent item, but it could be vastly improved. Set your expectations to "... meh".

Dont let the fact that is refurb scare you off, I got mine back in Nov and the only difference between in a new unit was the packaging. A really good deal in my opinion. It does take some work to bet it set up, maybe 2 hours to tweak everything the way I wanted but it is so worth it.

One thing I would add, the Logitech support for the 880 has been good. Mine blew out after about a year (IR just died) and after having me run some tests, Logitech mailed me out another refurb without having to send mine back and even covered the cost of shipping. Pleasantly surprised with the customer service and will definitely continue to buy Logitech remotes (and mice).

OK...will this remote replace my current remotes. Here is what I currently am using and want to know if one button turn on/off on this Logitech will do the trick. I have an HTPC that uses a Windows Media remote. That remote is used solely for turning the channels and setting up the Windows Media center stuff (setting the recordings etc...). The HTPC is connected to my Onkyo receiver which I have to use a separate remote to adjust volume...that same remote I've programmed to turn the TV on/off with (and of course to turn the receiver on/off with too). My Hitachi TV, which is an older HD TV (not a flat screen), has a remote that I have to use to set the aspect every time I turn it on (don't ask me why it won't stay on the aspect because I have no clue why it won't stay on the aspect I want even though I set it in the menu...it just won't stay). So, will this remote replace all three of remotes I mentioned?

Yes. You can check on Logitech's site to make sure it will work with all your equipment too. All you need is your model #'s.
