I just got a MX-510 (and I love it), but I have a few questions.

1)According to the box/manual that comes with it, it says to connect it to your PS/2 port, via the included adaptor, rather than to the USB port. I thought USB offered faster refresh rate and better performance. And it seems to be working fine on my USB.

2)Should I install the included software? What do I gain/lose by installing the included software? The mouse seems to work fine without it. And all of the buttons, except the change window button, work fine.

Thanks all.

I can't understand why ppl don't use ps2 if they can.
Is there a good reason?
Do you really get faster refresh rate, or not? In a mouse? wow?

You can reach 1000hz using USB compared to 200hz max using PS/2

I did not install the software/drivers.

I guess if you wanted to customize the buttons, or the "app launch" button, you would need to install the software.

Actually, your mouse will not even fill up the PS/2 limits so there's no point of going with USB.

I read in another thread that PS/2 has a faster refresh rate than USB. Does anyone know for sure?

By default PS/2's refresh rate is 80hz, and USB's is 125hz you can't adjust USB's but by using 3rd pary software you can adjust your PS/2's refresh rate up to 200hz thus making PS/2 "better" personaly I just leave it at 85hz same as my refresh rate and it works great

My screen only refreshes at 75Hz, so as far as I can tell the 125Hz USB should be plenty for me. If Im wrong, please correct me, but unless Im missing something, leaving my mouse on the USB port should be fine, shouldn't it.

Thanks All

Has anyone figured out how to map a button to launch an application? So far i only see what's listed in the "modify" dropdown list. I don't really use cruise up/down; i'd rather those be for launching apps.

(actually, i have the top button open My Computer, just need to figure out how to get the bottom button to launch firefox).

Yes USB is currently limited to 125, PS/2 200.

(1) On XP go to control panel.
(2) Select printers and other hardware.
(3) Select mouse.
(4) Select the "hardware" tab on mouse properties screen.
(5) Now click properties.
(6) On the PS/2 Compatibility Mouse Properties page click "advanced settings".
(7) Now you can select any sample rate desired, even as high as 200 reports/second and input buffer lengths up to 200 packets.

P.S. Be sure Fast Initialization is also checked... Good Luck !

The main reason that I prefer using the PS/2 port is to keep the USB buss resources as free as possible...

i used the mousware drivers i've been using for some time, i dont remember the version number (at work).

I haven't had any problems with the logitech drivers, usually work fine. I dont remember what other apps were included, but i just went with the mosueware drivers.

I plug in via usb cause i can? it doesn't particularly matter to me, works fine on USB (i'm sure it would on ps/2 as well).
