2. Open a graphics program, set it to "paint" (ie create a line whereever the mouse goes)
3. Swipe the mouse while drawing the line very quickly left and right.

The MX510 will produce a clean left/right series of zig zags. The MX1000 will jump all over the place. None of the pro teams will use the MX1000 so it's strictly amateur hour.
Tried it, I get clean left/right zigzags

I don't think anyone has really understood why the laser mouse has this momentary delay. I work daily around lasers and know that government regulations are a bear. It doesn't matter that the power output of the laser in this mouse is miniscule, it is just a LASER --- Ooooooooo no!! not a LASER!!! (Of course it is just non-sense but thats how some people think - especially government types)

I expect that in order to use a laser where people might potentially be exposed to it they were required to make a pretty aggresive system to detect that the mouse is against a surface and that the slight delay may have been required before it was approved. Now I doubt Logitech would admit that, but my suspicions are that this is the real story.

I suspect that for liability reasons they were afraid some ignoramus would pick up the mouse look at the laser beam and claim that "OH GOD, it hurt my eye!!!!! - I want millions of dollars".

Think about it.

P.S. On this basis I would be suprised to find much difference between the 1.4 and 1.3 (By the way has anybody answered how to figure out whether a particular base/mouse is v 1.3 or 1.4?

I haven't looked closely, but I can recreate the same thing the video shows, but I don't often lift my mouse in game. I am a two handed player I use a lefthanded joystick for forward, backward, strafe left and right and the mouse for steering. The joystick has twist, so I use that for fast turning, and the mouse for more controlled turning (shorter turns). To turn very fast I use both at the same time.

Cheers all
I looked into the laser. They use an extremely small laser, you can't hurt your eyes with it. I even swiftly rubbed my finger over the sensor to ensure that it was on.
So your eye damaging theory is null.

That mouse test is stupid. Who uses their mouse set that slow? No one I know of. Took forever to get to paint.

Just got the new MX1000 mouse. Boy do I wish I had found this forum first. What a heaping pile of crap this thing is. Worst mouse EVAR. Using it on a 'polished wood grain surface'. My Intellipoint worked fine on the surface, but latley has been getting a little crazy, plus the left mouse button double clicks at will, figured I'd upgrade. Holy crap, what a mistake. I've already got the Intellipoint plugged back in. The MX1000 acts like a ball mouse, refusing to move horizontally at times, vertically at others. What a flaming piece of monkey crap this thing is. I think I'll take it back, get the MX700, and spend the extra 20 bucks on beer.

Viper, you're right.

you people got the entirely wrong idea with the idiotic creator of the thread's idea. the mouse shutting off after lifted off the mouse pad is NOT a flaw nor does it mean it's busted. it does that to save on battery life. same way it goes into standby after not being used for a while. if it stayed active while the power switch was on, you probably wouldn't get anywhere NEAR as long of battery life as you do now.

DubNoBass, hesitates to move up and down/left and right? are you using an old fabric mousepad? if you are.... you made the most IDIOTIC post "EVAR". my mouse did the same thing when i used my old fabric-topped mousepad. i used my desk, it moved without a hitch. using a brand new fabric top mousepad, moves without a hitch (though now it sometimes seems to hesitate, but very rarely). If the surface is to smooth or looks the same to the MOUSE, it won't know whether the mouse was moved or not, and if it detects it was moved, it might not know which direction it was moved in. why do you think optic mice can't work on a smooth surface? cause they can't detect movement on smoother surfaces. Hell, put the MX1000 on a piece of printer paper, THEN complain about it moving erratically. the mouse is TOO sensitive for some surfaces. that's it. nothing wrong with the mouse. not a "beta" product, not a "flaming piece of monkey crap", nothing. you sound like a 10-year-old that can't make a decision for himself.

sorry for the rant. probably not even gonna pay attention to this lame ass excuse of a review/discussion thread. pure BS. the only people that like the mouse are those who did not pay attention to what arredondo said about it, and just used it in the way that they normally use it.

P.S. if you people still think the mouse is a POS, check the review/discussion thread at osnn.net that i, MYSELF, created called "Logitech MX1000 Laser club". not one person there said they absolutely hated the mouse for the reason Arredondo said or any other reason. it's a much better review than what he made. a "review" does not spam over and over about the same stupid problem that is only noticed when beating the mouse off the mousing surface.

I just got my MX1000 (rev 1.4) today and thought I'd just offer my opinions on it. Firstly, I do get the slight lag associated with lifting the mouse and then putting it on the table again. People said that this truly affected gaming in FPS so I wanted to test that theory out as well.

I started up UT2003 and had a go at it with my new mouse. Honestly, I don't see a problem. I was extremely concious of whether or not I lift up the mouse and to my surprise, I did (never noticed that before) but it didn't lose track. I guess I just didn't lift it high enough for the laser to turn itself off. So it didn't affect my gameplay one bit. But I also tried lifting it higher than normal and yes, the mouse lost tracking so I can understand why a lot of you are complaining, it can be bloody annoying.

From this, the only conclusion that I can draw up is that, it really depends whether or not this mouse is for you. You may not like this new "feature" of the laser turning itself off but like it or not, its not Logitech's fault (assuming what other people are saying on this forum about laws and regulations are true). Personally, I love this mouse! It tracks very well, is responsive and I don't experience any of the FPS problems other people seem to have.

In the end, I think it just depends on the individual using the mouse. If you don't experience these problems, then this is a great mouse to get. If you do, then well, that's why there are other products available on the market for you to try.

i dont know what everyone else is talking about with the mouse turning off when you pick it up. mine does not. The thing even works on my glass mouse pad. I just got it today, but I played CS:S for a good hour and it seemed fine to me.

and where's the version number?

I guess you all got bad apples. Bought my at Sam's for 60 bucks and I couldn't be happier, even works about 3 MM off my mouse pad. If I lift the mouse back up and put it down, it does lag, but I don't use my mouse like that, so I don't care.

I have a old Logitec wireless mouse i got in a bundle (the one that came in the bundles before the MX700) and has been flawless. There is no noticeable lag between setting it down and moving it. It takes about 3-4 seconds for it to go to sleep, and when it wakes up it moves right away. It doesnt get me killed in games either...

With a laser or optical why use a mousepad? My whole table is my pad so need to lift. That and high sensitivity so easy to wheel around when getting shot in the back. Hands are pretty steady so I can use high sensitivity.

I had the MX700 since its inception and recently switched to the MX1000. The feature that I can't stand about it is the battery. While some might love this feature, I much prefer the MX700 style, whereby I could swap NiMH batteries any time I please. Although the battery life seems to be decent and the battery meter is a nice touch. Just some thoughts. As far as performance, I can't really tell much of a difference, except to say that the MX1000 clearly works on MANY more surfaces than the MX700. The only surface that I've experienced any problem with is clear glass with nothing beneath for several feet.

I got the mouse for Xmas (gift to myself) and used it on my glass desk. Whether the glass is clear or when I have a piece of paper under it, the mouse pointer doesn't move at all.

It's nice and all, but I don't want to pay $60 for something that my intellimouse can do.

dquan97, you didn't read too much into it, did you? for one, the manual for the mouse itself says it will not work on clear glass or mirrored surfaces. also, if you are talking about using printer paper under it, i've already said quite a few times, if not here than at osnn.net, that it DOES NOT WORK when you use printer paper under it. other than that it's a lot better than an intellimouse as far as i know. i even like it a lot better than my MX500.

It's possible. Most people aren't aware of the fact that lithium batteries have enough energy density as a bomb. Now, the scary part is that people are demanding more power in a smaller package. I wonder if they will ever approach the energy density of a nuclear bomb :-D.

I was worried that I would have problems with the batteries on the MX100 since I've run out on my MX700 occasionally (forgetting to charge it for a few days) and needed to swap some new ones in while the old ones charged. Then I realized I'd just forgotten to cradle my MX1000 for a weeks worth of use (accidently covered the cradle with something I'd printed a week ago) and it was still at two green lights. I stopped worrying.

And no, my MX1000 doesn't wait for a second when its picked up and put down. I'm not saying there wasn't a bad batch, but the problem does seem very overblown in this thread. If it worries you that much, make sure you buy at a store with a decent return policy.

My MX1000 does not have that behaviour either..
..
although I don't see any reasony why you'd want to use (abuse) your mouse like that!
