So I'm in the market for a new mouse as my old MX300 no longer has drivers that can run in Vista with my new machine.

I'm very enthusiastic about regular-shaped mice, so I've never considered going the MX518 or G5 route. Instead I've had my eye on mice like:
Microsoft 6000
Logitech G3
Logitech RX1000 (recently discovered)

I also enjoy at least one extra button for gaming, which is how I've settled on my choices (since I can no longer program my MX300's buttons).

I've tried the 6000 in person so I know that it's slightly different than what I'm used to, the side buttons are also awkardly placed, this is a common problem for ambidextrous mice. The G3 is the tried and true shape for me...however I can't justify spending close to $50 for a mouse! Then while searching around Newegg I noticed the Logitech RX1000 which could be had for under $30. It has a shape similar to the somewhat more popular LX3 mouse, but with an extra center button! Seems like it could potentially be the perfect fit for me.

I'm worried about the long narrow shape and want to know how other people feel about it if they've tried them before, and also if all the buttons on the RX1000 are programmable! I always put a lot of thought into peripheral devices so just looking for some more opinions before coming to a decision.

I just got it form newegg - terrific mouse, very smooth and light. Nice buttons to, can't go wrong with it.

Hi,

right now I'm sitting in the office and I'm using the Logitech RX1000.
I've bought the device about 6 month ago for about 14 Euros (I'm living in Germany). Perhaps there is a OEM version of the mouse in the U.S. too?

I'm absolutely happy with the mouse:

Pros:
- Perfectly balanced (not too heavy because it's corded)
- works smoothly on any(!) surface. I've tried even satinated glass.
- Cord is long enough even for a desktop sitting somewhere under the table
- Nice design in conservative colors (black and silver)
- Terribly cheap

Cons:
- No extra buttons for gaming (the one on the top is really ill-placed for gaming)

I would definitely recommend this device for desktop and notebook users in business context.

Bottom line: You can't do anything wrong buying this mouse. It is perfect for everyday work and will make a decent job in gaming.

Cheers from Dusseldorf

I agree with the pros although there's one major con.

I've been using it for a few days and while I really love the way the mouse handles, my hands actually started aching after using it for a while. The mouse sits slightly higher and narrower than the typical mouse that i've grown used to and it makes a difference. Really depends on how you could the mouse. I would still say that it's a great value, but not for me.

This is a pretty easy answer. If you liked the MX300 as much as I did, (and I loved it) then get the G3. I upgraded from the MX300 to it and I absolutely love it. And Logitech SetPoint works in Vista, so you're covered there. Also, it has a side button on both sides, so you get a couple extra buttons. Overall, it's the best choice for an MX300-user.

Tried both, I actually do like the G3 better.

The RX1000 just was not made to be a gaming mouse. I didn't realize this before, but the mouse feet (skates) are actually quite rough on the RX1000.
