From the Manufacturer
Logitech took its award-winning Z-680 speaker system and made it even better. How? By improving everything from the subwoofer to the satellites and adding innovations such as real-time digital sound equalization. The result is the Logitech Z-5500 Digital, a THX-certified, 500-watt, 5.1 surround sound speaker system that offers everything a listener could possibly want, and some things folks didn't even know they needed. And once listeners plug in their PCs, DVD or music players, or video game consoles, they'll never want to listen to anything else.
The speaker system offers powerful, distortion-free bass, with a large 10-inch long-throw subwoofer driver with a flared bass port, which delivers 188 watts of thunderous audio. The system's innovative driver technology also extends to the polished-aluminum phase-plug satellites, which combine two drivers into one, offering the clarity of a tweeter with the richness and fullness of a separate mid-range. In addition, the Z-5500's digital equalization adjusts the frequency response in real time for the cleanest, most accurate sound reproduction.

Additional features:

DTS 96/24 support: Enjoy studio-quality sound thanks to the Z-5500's support for 96 kHz/24-bit digital audio streams
Powerful controls: The Digital SoundTouch control center lets you control volume to all speakers, set inputs, and much more. In addition, the separate wireless remote is great for home theaters and video game consoles
Innovative satellite design: Cloth grilles are removable for a pro-audio look. Pedestals rotate for easy wall mounting or desk placement. Center channel can be mounted on wall, above or below monitor
Connect to multiple sources: Simultaneously connect 6 audio sources--including PCs, video game consoles, and DVD, CD, and portable music players--and then control it all from the Digital SoundTouch control center
What's in the Box
Four satellite speakers, center channel speaker, subwoofer, 6-channel direct cable, Digital SoundTouch control center, wireless remote control, batteries, user's manual.

This price is pretty hot, no?

I'd love to get a system like this someday (Z640's can be a bit lacking), but alas I really cannoy justify it yet. Living in the dorms doesn't even really give me an opportunity to utilize my Z640's like I would like.

For audiophiles, no, but you can't beat the price. But I've heard the Z5500s being touted as the "hands down" best set of PC speakers for hearing the explosions and other such effects in PC games.

And at $80 less ($50 less not including the rebate), its hard not to go with these over the Klipsch Ultras.

For the $$$, I'd invest the money on a kickass receiver + some good bookshelf speakers. At least you'll still be making good use out of it after 4-5 yrs. If you're really on a tight budget but really want good sound, get yourself a sennheiser hd590 headphone (under $120 for refurb on amazon), the sound quality will still blow these speakers out of the way. I'd have to say its the best headphone out there that doesn't require an external amplifer. Satellite speakers are for ladies, physics will tell you that they suck at high volumes over large air mass (Bose is no exception).

In my experience, a pair of mirage bookshelf speakers or my headphone in stereo mode sound better than any pc speaker sets with dts/dd5.1 has to offer. Discrete channels are good, but it's useless without good details.

I'm not so sure about that.... I mean you're probably going to want a sub too if you're talking about replacing this... and I don't think there's anything viable for subs under $100 that would be comparable to the logitech sub. So that leaves you with max $180 for speakers and receiver. $100 for a pair of speakers and $80 for a receiver? I dunno.

Even without a sub, I don't think you're going to be able to get a "kickass" receiver for under $200.

get a hd590 headphone then, the bass will still sound better

of course, a speaker + receiver system will cost more and run you around $500+. Thats why i say take the money and invest in it. It's better than junking those pc speakers after 3 yrs.

Link To Rebate

The price from amazon.com jumped back up to $306.99 but can be purchased from office depot portion of amazon for $293.95 but I don't think the rebate applies. I bought them right before the price went up and I signed up for the amazon.com platinum card to get an additional 30 dollars off

Yea this is odd... Guess they though $250 was too cheap? And the rebate is supposed to be till the 27th... Oh well I got mine on the 17th, so I'm happy. My order status is "Shipping Soon" - anyone know what amazons definition of soon is? Just never seen that status before.

Don't fool yourself into thinking these were comparable with the Ultras. As I noted in another hijack, I just set a set of these up where I had a set of Ultras before, and I was severely underwhelmed. I tried out some music, movies, and games to test it out and I'm taking these back immediately. As far as explosions, they're a lot less clear, even on a modern well-mixed movies. Even at a drastically reduced price, I'm not liking these at all as a long-term solution.

Does anyone know if these speakers on Amazon feature the New, revised speaker wiring without RCA plugs?

The ones on Newegg do, thats the only one so far that has the revised ones as far as I have seen.

not sure exactly if I follow what you mean by revised speaker wiring? do you mean just +/- cables? Just got my logitech 5500's hooked up, and it uses rca type connections to connect the speakers to the sub. sub to control center uses a serial looking connection, and in back of controller is front/rear/sub connections, optical input and coax input
