Logitech Z-5500

So I was about a week away from ordering a set of these nice Logitech 5500s when I notice that they are sold out and have no ETA for a new batch. I guess I should check my wish lists more often.

They will be replacing an aging but still decent set of Altec Lansing ADA 885s. Heh, these puppies have been in service since the good ole days of the original napster! So a seven year run as a primary speaker set up is about good enough for me.

Ive done enough research, review etc to know that the 5500 are the speakers for me. I was also going to pick up a SB X-fi gamer sound card to make my rig fully Vista capable. Ive seen that Logitech and zipzoomfly have some in stock, but they want the full 400 premium. I would rather get the from newegg at the great price of 300, but I have no idea when they will get new stock!

If you were me, would you wait to order the sound card with the new speakers? As it stands, after I get a new sound card and speaker set, Im about $100 bucks away from having completely upgraded my system to the point where Ill have a whole set of parts and peripherals to build a bedroom computer. Hmmm.... pron rig? heheh

Anyway, just figured Id pick yer brains.

We just sold our last set at work on thursday, or else I could have gotten you a set for $279

All we got now are the 5450's, which are just as good IMO (and more inputs on the control center).

If you are gonna wait for those speakers to come available again, I wouldn't wait to get the soundcard with them, you can still get enjoyment out of the X-Fi card.

So are they just that popular that they cant make these fast enough, or are they planning a product refresh and will NOT be making these anymore?

Bump. If you were in the market for this set, would you pay $400 bucks that some places want to get them given the fact that they are all but sold out internet wide, or would you wait until the came back into stock at a site for 300? Really want to upgrade my sound, but an extra 100 dollar premium to get them NOW doesnt seem worth it to me.

Would it be worth it to you?

There have been a few threads lately about limited z-5500 and Promedia Ultra availability. I'm not really sure if there is official word on either.

$400 is a LOT for those speakers. You could get an Onkyo 7.1 set for that price.

I see you said you "know that the 5500 are the speakers for me", how did you decide on that?

If music is a primary thing you're going to be doing, you could do much better than the z-5500s.

Well, as far as the speakers themselves go I am not what you would call a very "PICKY" person when it comes to sound. However my roommate has them on his system and I am very pleased (blown away in fact) with the performance/dollar value. I understand that there are better speaker sets, as well as sets that are cheaper with decent performance, but from my personal experience with these speakers, i know that I want a set.

The use for these speakers will be for both gaming and music playback. My current AL ADA 885s are now 7 years old and while they were amazing when I got my first P3 powered Dell OEM back in the day, they are definitely showing their age. I can hear audible distortion when turned up, and the punch the subwoofer had has been lost. I think that 7+ years of loud gaming in addition to being a primary party set for a few years has degraded performance.

getting back to the Logitech's, for what they are asking for the set v. performance delivered, I can say that these are the speakers for me.

wait for them to go back to $300 or below, as YOyo... already said onkyo makes a very nice 7.1 system (including reciever) which can often be found around $400 and will also work nicely with a home theater setup, though it would be overkill for a small room or bedroom.

Too lazy to confirm, but might be some bad news. They stopped making 5500s. So there may never be more stock at newegg. Guess you could look around a bit. And please feel free to research their production status (discontinued?).

The Z5500's is one of the best purchases I've ever made. Get em ' while you can! i had mine now for some 2 years.

Where would I look to try to confirm something like this. I seriously thinking about calling Logitech totry and confirm that. if they got something better in the pipeline to replace it, thats one thing. But if they are going to just drop it period, Ill be very pissed off!
