Found the Z680s at a Best Buy in Tennessee on clearance price, apparently the newer Logitech Z-5300s were released within the past month, and they are clearing out old stock of the 680s. (btw, the newer 5300s are retailing $200, and they are a notch or 2 below the 680s regarding quality, according to reviews)

Furthermore, this particular best buy has been opened < 3 months, I bought the floor model 680s(which are practically mint, very low mileage) for an additional 10% off. Came with box, manuals, warranty card, even batteries.

So, final cost was $179.99 + tax (and TN tax is a whopping 9.25%!!!) = $197.54.

Not sure if the stock clearing for the Z-5300s is nationwide or just local (so YMMV), but good luck! These 680s are just the thing to replace my Klipsch ProMedia 4.1s...

Damn, that would be nice. Sadly, I must wait till Saturday for money, and I'll be getting the 560's, which are a kick-ass set in their own right... Nice find.

thats odd, b/c the 5300s arent meant to replace the 680s, and the 680s arent that old. excellent deal though, i love mine!

havent hooked them up yet, but I do know that logitech manufactured rev1.1 (?) that addressed the no-load hiss issue.

Don't believe everything you read on message boards. Hard to find many speaker reviews where these didn't rank #1.

some of them do have a hiss... but, it's not very loud...

mine hiss, but only if you really try to listen for it... my computer fans drown out most of the hissing, i think... it's not noticible, but some people have said that Logitech fixed it, but I dunno about that.

Just an FYI, if you haven't checked yet...BB's website does not show a match for Logitech z-680...so more than likely these are in fact on clearance. They're showing the newer 5300's however.

People complaining about other issues probably have issues with their sound cards they are using.

Is that with tax? Because they should be ~ 299.99. When the 680s first came out, they retailed for 400, but I think earlier this year they went down to 300 across the board (even though the logitech website still claims a MSRP of 400).

If anyone else finds them on clearance, we'd like to hear about it (of course)

update: not sure if there are some of us following the same topic over at FW, but someone else got the same $200 price quote up in the NY metro area, only problem is that they were out of stock everywhere.

So looks promising *crosses fingers for fellow ATers*

One question about the Z680s. How do they stack up against a full home theater in a box? I'm wondering because I've seen a Kenwood HTB-205 on sale a the local Fry's for as low as $179 and CC even has a pretty beefy looking HTB-456 on sale for $269 after rebates. It just seems to me that if you have a PC with a S/PDIF out, a full home theater system might give you more bang for your buck. What I find especially nice on the HT setups is that you can always upgrade the speakers if you find some good deals (it's my understanding that the HTB-205 has a pretty decent receiver with lots of headroom to add some pretty beefy 100W RMS speakers later if the included 3" sats don't do it for you).

I'm looking to upgrade the sound on my PC now, and it looks like the HT prices have gone down a lot, while at the same time the PC speaker systems have gotten a bit more ambitious (like the Z680s which will decode DTS and Dolby Digital) and so in the $200-$300 price range you have two different types of technology to choose from that do about the same thing. Anyone have any thoughts on what would be better, a cheap HT system or a set of Z680s?

Razorguts-

I checked with some of the other stores in the DFW area and was told they were in fact on citywide clearance. I rechecked the Arlington, Tx store and now they confirm this, but only after I mentioned that another store manager had told me that they were on sale. I'm pretty sure that after I've alerted them to this, the remaining two sets they have there will disappear (they were waaaaaaaaaaaaay up on a shelf and probably forgotten about, since they didn't even have a price tag out on the floor for them)

Irving, Tx, Ducanville, Tx also have them in stock at the $199 pricetag. I'm sure there are a few more, but since there are about 40 BB's in this area, I'm not gonna call them all

However, if I can get CC to PM them (on a 2nd attempt, now that I have proof and BB denied it when they called on the 1st attempt) the Arlington store may get one back. We'll see.

BEWARE OF THE 1.0.3 Pods!!!

Make sure that the version you get is the 1.1.2 on the pod as that is the one that does not hiss.

Here's a link to the thread discussing the problems with the 1.0.3's and how to identify them.

Z-680's

By the way great deal on an excellent speaker set!

good link Pez...

I would NOT recommend these as a home theater replacement due to the lack of inputs...if you are only going to hook one device up to them, then fine, but a home theater can be hooked up to your DVD player, your VCR, your TV, CD player, Computer, etc, etc...

These are good speakers though.

Yes. I tried 3 sets of these - all of them hissed. See my thread in general hardware on them (search for Z680). All of my pods were version 1.1.2. If this is the revision that addressed the hissing, I can only imagine how awful they must have been before this "fix." I went the home theater route also. Picked up a Denon AVR483/1403 for $168, Dayton 10" sub for $113, and a set of Infinity Entra Point 5s for $201. Sure, it's more than the Logitechs, but the sound quality is head and shoulders above them or any PC setup for that matter. Depends on your budget. FWIW, I probably would have been happy with the Logitechs if they did not hiss.

You can use the satellites hooked up to a receiver if it supports 6ohm loads, since that's what these speakers are.

The Logitechs actually have 3 selectable inputs, optical and coax digital in and 6 channel discrete. You could use these for a small HT. Hook up the DVD, PS2 or XBox via optical, TV via discrete, and even a coax input for an HTPC if you like. Since you won't be sitting as close to the speakers as you would if they were setup for your computer, you probably wouldn't notice the hiss.

No hiss. I run mine through the spdif output of my Inspiron laptop, they sound very nice. The only sorta complaint that's stood is that Logitech made the subwoofer for whales, not people. Keep it set loooooooowwww.
