i was in the computer lab at school and I was saying the 200 G5's are not strapped down and someone with a big enough bag could attempt to walk out with one, he said the new G5's have a locator beacon of some type in them and that they can be tracked, i told him he was full of it, has anyone else heard this

Uh, I guess you could slap a lojack style thing in the case

Or some software that says here I am when connected to the internet.

I would bet he's bullshitting you though.

Well the school's G5s may have some form of tracking device in them, but AFAIK the G5s don't come with anything like that as standard. Why not give it a try and see what happens?

I would advise going this route

It wouldn't bee to hard to fit an apparatus like them, but it would need to be attached to something like the mobo not the case. Any one can ditch the case, it's the cheapest part to replace. As far as a built in tracking device while connected to the internet, every broadband computer has one. It's called a MAC address on the NIC.

You can't ditch the G5 case. Have a look inside sometime. The computer won't work without the case.

Anyways, there is no tracking system, unless they added one (which would be stupid). I'm surprised they didn't just chain them down, since there is a thingy on the back for this purpose.

I don't think they could even get away with putting a tracking device in the case. Remember, unlike the G4 cases, the G5 had to use external WiFi and Bluetooth antennas because the metallic G5 case killed the signal; a tracking device might suffer a similar fate.

I highly doubt there's any type of tracking system in those G5s. With the cost of equipping 200 G5s with such devices (and the capability to track them), it would have been cheaper and easier to install proper security.

I'm pretty sure that you can only see the MAC addresses of whatever is on your local network. That's not any help when the thing is across the internet.
