i rather download videos than movies.. who wants to watch star wars - attack of the sith in 2 channel surround on taken with a video camera.

I hate it, i rather watch it in full format.

downloading movies does not appeal to me, infact i rather buy my movie, since it has more intrinsic value to it. Now downloading music, that's a different thing. I cant figure out why i got to pay 20 bucks for a cd when a dvd costs teh same. If it wsa 10 bucks and the music collection wsa bigger than what's on the radio, i would buy.

Even so i dont download music.

In reality P2P is being strangled, its a good technology, damn greedy companies are stemming it.

if this was a large site it's entirely possible that more than a million dollars worth of downloads occurred. way more.

it's all very simple really, you want to see a movie ? pay for it.

a lot of people don't seem to understand that a free society is largely based on individual morality. It's impossible to have freedom if large segments of the population decide to disregard the law because they feel they can get away with it, rather than living by some sort of code of personal conduct that doesn't include stealing other people's property.

Every last fscking one of you people bitching about the MPAA would whine and kick like a schoolgirl if someone stole your work product from you.

I think it's stupid that the MPAA does what it does, why can't they come up with a "iMovies" so we can buy movies for like $4-5 a movie. I know I would instead of renting them. It's just SOOO stupid. Are they gonna sue everyone in America now?
Your "iMovies" idea already exists, and is called "Netflix". The issue with movie downloaders is that they aren't downloading instead of renting, they are downloading instead of going to the theater.
But yes, any content provider should accept some level of piracy, and I imagine that the MPAA will feel some level of backlash in the short term from its actions here. But when the dust settles, they will have more control over their content than ever.

I have Netflix, but I don't own those movies legally. I mean I might make a "back up" FOR Netflix once and a while, but I don't own those movies.

Yup. I've had a movie I've worked on pirated on the net. You can't quite understand the feeling until you've had it happen to you, that this thing you've worked and slaved over is being stolen. A lot of people claim the MPAA is driven by greed. But what is a pirate driven by when he's too cheap to pay $3 to rent a movie? I agree that there should be the equivalent of iTunes for movies, hopefully the industry will realize this sooner rather than later...

Nice answer there, but you know it's the truth.

Of course, some try to justify it by saying it's OK to steal the work product of a big, rich company, but not a single person.

THAT is the real  when it comes to this subject.

Not enough of a penalty, as Skoorb explained above.

If you're caught cheating on your taxes, shoplifitng, or stealing someone's car you don't just pay actual damages. In order to keep the ethically challenged on their best behavior, you need punitive damages.

I really hate how they're goona start going after people who download TV shows. I mean if I forget to watch an episode of 24 and didn't tape it, I wanna be able to keep up with the show. And no buying a tivo isnt a valid option because I don't watch a lot of TV and would never use it.

There really does need to be a service where you can download movies for cheap, like 4-5$ since a lot of people don't wanna wait for netflix movies to arrive.

You know, they make most of their money from popcorn. I never get food at the theater, and I rarely go to the movies anymore. In fact, total tickets sold is down at theaters. But since they keep increasing the prices on everything, sales is up :/

I don't mind that they fined them for this, but I can't stand the fact that it makes it so that we can't legaly make copies for the fair use act anymore. anyone with children can tell you it's cheaper to replace a $1 copy of a DVD/VHS movie than it is to replace the $20+ printed media.

This I completely agree with, and with Blu-Ray/HD-DVD they will be much more careful to protect the encryption than they were with DVD. So you probably won't even be able to "illegally" (but ethically) back them up like you can with DVD.

It makes me sick when people feel sorry for some fourteen-year-old caught downloading copywrited material, pulling together a fund for his plight, and denouncing the MIAA as "evil facists bastards."

If you aren't willing to accept the consequences for illegally downloading and distributing movies and music, don't download the material to begin with.
Yes Gestapo tactics,:
"We have your IP, and a large team of lawyers standing by. Pay us $5k or go to court to fight it where it will cost you more than $5k in lawyer fees anyways. We have no proof that you downloaded the entire movie, or that it was even you that downloaded it in the first place."
How about when subpoena ISPs for your identity with shaky evidence like "IP 192.34.54.21 downloaded part of what we believe may be a movie file". This kind of sloppy evidence would be laughed at in court in any case apart from copyright infringement.

Imagine if someone was killed in a house and the person who pays the utilities was automatically charged with the murder because they live there.

Like I said, they can and should enforce their copyrights, but the way they're going about it is absolutely ridiculous.

Exactly! What happens when the DVD becomes unreadable due to scratching, etc. Does that mean you have to buy another copy (since you aren't allowed to circumvent the copy protection due to the DMCA) or should the movie studio be forced to send you a new disc?

like I said. When the MPAA starts fighting for the porn industry, is when they REALLY care about copyright laws.

Fvck the MPAA. I for one won't go to see movies ever now. I rarely see anything good coming out, but rest assured I will download whatever the fvck I want now. I downloaded maybe 2-3 movies from Loki in all my time there, and they shut down the whole site? Bullsh1t, they could've just taken all the movies off. Fvcking greedy bastards.
