BTW, if you are interested Sigma sells a 200-500mm which will go 400-1000mm with included 2x teleconverter. Of course, it is slightly more expensive at $26,000. It also is just a little heavier, approximately 35 lbs.

If you are really interested in the ultimate lens, Canon made a 1200mm prime. It retailed at like $90,000. Several years ago, a used one came up for sale at B & H for a measly $180,000.

I've seen less substantial tripods on machine guns....

I used to use an old Nikon 400/3.5 lens with a 2x teleconverter back in the film days. It was a beast to focus. Used it to snipe a photo of Marilyn Manson during filming on the set of his I Don't Like The Drugs video back in the day.

Edit: Realized it's Rokinon not Optika that I have.

I have a similar one but it's a Rokinon 1300mm so not same. I still need to figure out a way to mount it better, standard tripods are too wobbly, it's not so much the tripod itself, but the fact that it's only one tiny screw. I need something that clamps it and is supported at multiple points while still allowing find adjustments, which a tripod lacks. It's hard to aim it. I think buying a telescope with DSLR mounting option might actually be a better option as the telescope tripods are better and allow finer adjustment.

It's same thing from the same parent company. The 2600 is with a 2x extender. you can always fashion a longer plate and just zip tie the lens to the plate.

LK-A2 Holding Co. owns Optika, Rokinon, Samyang and I am sure a few more.

Also LOL at rubber band filters

something like this.

Yeah just realized that it just uses a converter. I'm kinda curious to try one with mine lmao. The plate won't help, no matter what, everything is held down by a single screw to the tripod head. Need something more robust that clamps around the whole lens, and uses a better mechanism all the way to the ground. At some point I want to try to fabricate something.

I also tried using two tripods - one on camera and one on lens, which kinda works but it makes aiming rather difficult.

I said fashion a plate, use zipties near end of plate then clamp arca-swiss down. that ought to do. There are heads with large arca-swiss clamps.

Since you have one, does it tend to bend in the middle at full extension? I've read several reviews indicating that was a problem with that lens.

Also, regarding your attempt at using two tripods, I wonder if using one of those "flexible" tripods on the camera would work any better than a regular one in regards to aiming.

It has a bit of play in it when fully extended, but it's not really bad to the point of affecting image. The major issue is trying to adjust the focus or aim without it wobbling all around. That's more of a mounting issue though. Ideally what would be nice is something motorized so I don't have to touch it. Just walking in the house with it aimed at something and it bounces. If using outside the wind will also cause it to bounce. I'm not sure what the pros do really, they must have a totally different mounting system than the single screw based tripods.

My biggest was a 55-200 from Nikon. Whatever they call their cheap lenses, entry level or something.

I have a Canon EF 75-300 IS f/4-5.6. I also have a cheap 2x converter.

Resisting tenptation to buy the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary.

I don't blame you - that Sigma is a very nice looking lens for the price. Plus, it doesn't hurt that 2x teleconverter you have could add some serious additional reach to it.

They are getting back to reflex? Bizarre.

I guess there could be some oddball situations where those might work, like where you plan to crop out your subject. But you are losing out on resolution by doing that. I guess that matters less with super high megapixel professional cameras.

Come to think of it, how do mirror telescopes get around that? Or does the eye piece section zoom in further through a small part of the donut?
