The teachers are forced to spend more time "teaching' at school and they have taken "free" periods from them. As much as many think teaching is easy and teachers day ends at 3:05 they are mistaken.

Usually i bitch when teachers go on strike. This case its understandable. the state demanded teachers work more without a pay raise or breaks.

fuck that.

Rahm is a idiot. To force something (that is btw debatable if it is even going to help the kids) on the teachers and not deal with the union is fucking idiotic. just plain fucking idiotic.

Welcome to the real world. I work for a school district, too... and I work more without a pay raise or break all the time. I'm not a union employee. I don't bitch about it because I'm glad to have a job These teachers should be glad to be employed.

Parents are retarded, more breaking news at....

When did the culture of ignorance take over? There was a time when doing bad in school meant getting your ass beat by your parents. Now the parents insist that the test should be changed so there is no wrong answer.

I'd guess the culture of ignorance took over about when kids went from having "parents" to having a "parent". The decline of the two-parent household is going to doom generations to a cycle of poverty.

well, statistics can be misleading. . . just because 40% of children are born to unwed mothers, doesn't mean the father isn't still in the household . . . or that the father figure was even the one who donated bodily fluids to the mother . . .

more on topic teachers unions IMO are too powerful, and or the other party at the negotiating table is too weak to stand up to their demands

Doesn't help parents are not being good at parenting. Along with allowing children to grow up disrespecting people and adults and no morals.

CPS offered the teachers 16% salary increases over four years, plus incentives for better performance. The teachers weren't asked to take on the extra hours without compensation.

I can't really sympathize with a group that's complaining about work hours when they only work 8 months out of the year. For the time they work their salary is equivalent to over 100+k. That's insane.

Now, the other issue of evaluating teachers based on kids, that one I can sympathize with them on. I don't know of a good way to do it considering these kids come to teachers completely fucked over by shitty parenting. Not even the best teachers can overcome such horrid parenting.

If teachers need to be fired/hired/pay based on how well students do, parents should be receiving grades too. Too many don't even show up to conferences let alone actually taking the time to follow up with teaching their kids at home and helping them.

and this is a big fucking problems. kids spend so much time getting ready for this test that should be spent learning the information. instead they spend time learning how to take the damn test.

Getting ready for a test is called studying. Studying is called learning.

I love how the nbc headline state Rahm tell the union to "Finish it for our children." Translation: Rahm doesn;t have a resolution and use children as a leverage to get what he want and made the teacher look bad while at it. Personally, kids are already spending too much time in classroom without any kind of break beside lunch time. Adding more classroom time won;lt help a bit if the kids brain is in a shutdown mode.

Not universally true. It depends on the age. Elementary-level kids (grades K-4 or 5) soak up everything you teach them like sponges; they can benefit from more classroom time. Middle-school kids (grades 5-8) are more like what you described; brains in shutdown mode. High-school kids are somewhere in between.

Kids can be engaged and learning effectively, regardless of age, if the curriculum, tools, and teaching methods are properly differentiated.

they already rejected a 16% increase over 4 years, and a slew of other benefits.

CPS offered the teachers 16% salary increases over four years, plus incentives for better performance. The teachers weren't asked to take on the extra hours without compensation.

They rejected an independent arbitrator's report saying they should receive a 15-20% pay increase in the first year. Seems like there might be more to it than just wages.

Also - one of the new trends is to tie raises to performance ratings and class size. While they might be offered a 16% raise over 4 years it might only be if they take on class sizes of 45 students and 95% of them get a 90% or higher on the final. Not saying thats the case as I could find no information on how the raises would be determined but it is definitely something I have seen

Not long after he took office Emanuel reneged on a teachers pay increase that had been negotiated. He then sought to extend the school day in return for a 2% pay increase, which was rejected by the union.

(snip)

Then, an independent arbitrator ruled that teachers should receive raises of between 15% and 20% in the first year for a longer working day, and criticised the school board for trying to extend the longer day during such tough times.

The Chicago Teachers Union had gone into negotiations asking for a wage increase of nearly 30 percent over two years. Sources said the union realizes that the price of a major pay hike in terms of lost jobs and working conditions would be too high.

Union officials now face the task of explaining to members why it would reject a salary increase that is less than they asked for but significantly higher than the 2 percent first-year raise CPS initially offered.

(snip)

On Sunday, union Vice President Jesse Sharkey, who declined to comment on the arbitrator's report, said the union must consider many issues beyond wages.

$76k average salary plus sh*t ton of benefits and 16% raise over 4 years.

They should be fired. It's not like the kids will notice anyway. Barely half of kids who enter high school in Chicago even graduate.

Funny to watch them squeeze Chicago even more, though. Eventually the money will run out and those who are laid off can think back to the good ole' days of working 10 months/year for $76k plus s*t ton of benefits.

you are unfamiliar with standardized testing arent you?

schools have teachers teach the test so the school does better and teachers look good... its bullshit and it is not studying.

This will end soon, there's no way Obama is going to let this get dragged out for a long time. He'll tell Rahm to pay off the thugs.

The average teacher in Chicago makes around $76,000 + benefits and they want a 30% pay increase over two years. Fuck them.

Born and raised in Chicago. First off, that's an average which means exactly shit. Second off, that's not exactly a lot of money for Chicago.

I am generally not a fan of unions and am not defending these teachers but discrediting them based on their salary being too high is foolish, because it's not.
