Unions are important for the workforce in this nation.

However they seem to have too much power in too many circumstances.

Unions are an important counter balance to corporate power and excess profits.

The problem with public unions is there are no corporate profits to divvy up. So who exactly are they acting as a balance to?

Unions are important for the workforce in this nation.

Non-public sector unions that are fighting for safe working conditions and better benefits are important.

Public sector unions are a waste of taxpayers money, as they already get good pay, good working conditions and good benefits.

The people that need the unions are the coal miners, and not the teachers.

I think being protected from the whims of newly elected officials is probably what originally spawned public unions.

Now it has grown to become being protected from incompetence, criminal activity, etc. (i.e. impossible to be fired).

The average teacher in Chicago makes around $76,000 + benefits and they want a 30% pay increase over two years. Fuck them.

Right, they are still important if conditions are to change. Not needed, but good to keep the union "alive/active" so if something was to happen that would really hurt workers either condition or fairness wise, they can work it out.

However having the power to deny government of cutting their jobs or forcing higher wages than other places is simply too much power.

Sounds like this should be over quickly, plus from the outside it sounds reasonable.

It's not really the money in this case, the union will trade most of that negotiating point away to avoid the evaluations and lock in the jobs pool for teachers who's schools have been closed (that they be rehired at any new schools instead of outside hires).

See, that's what bugs me about unions. I don't mind people negotiating for higher pay, but the way they protect mediocrity is sickening.

This goes to show that teachers are typically well-educated people and are able to detect when they're being screwed. We should be seeing more collective actions similar to this over the next few years. Hopefully more working class people will follow their lead and demand better compensation for their effort.

There is plenty of money in our economy. The problem is that there is a very unequal distribution of it at this time in history.

CTU... putting themselves before students. Color me totally unsurprised.

Fuck CTU... their demands are almost 100% unreasonable.

Looks like the major issue here is that teachers don't want their evaluations based on student performance.

I agree but that was in the 30's to the 50's AND those were private section unions.

Public sector unions have no business existing.

Money distribution is only for those on the Government Nipple. The rest of the money is earned.

Teachers unions are very powerful, here they passed laws that made it nearly impossible to fire a teacher, and even then the cost is hundreds of thousands of dollars for each fired teacher.
