I see Microsoft is fighting to make sure when you search for "Microsoft Security Essentials" that THEY are at the top of the list!

Of course people fall for these scams, hell people fall for Nigerian scams as well. I have yet met a person who became a millionaire for helping some Nigerian transfer funds or a person who had rescued a Nigerian princess.

Hehe a guy I knew fell for one of those things, put in his credit card number, and got a call from his cc company within an hour saying they suspected fraud. Someone in Germany was trying to purchase a CAR using his cc info.

YES they do. and they're normal people who does not touch a computer except for doing 'facebook' or 'myspace' stuff.

I was annoyed when my wife took home her coworker's laptop to have me look at. it was filled with stuff. and of cause some 'fake' anti-virus program that she installed and paid for. i wiped out the laptop and put the OEM os back, with ESET NOD for her. hopefully it'll last a few months.

I got a free meal at a Brazilian BBQ Place for it.

Yes, and there is a lot of money to be made. Most of those programs are backed by a Russian company...I forget the name.

The asshats that trick you into installing it (it is generally no more than adware/browser redirects) get about a 60% comission on the sale. Someone actually gained access to the Russian company's records of payouts...one such "hacker" made $150,000 in ONE WEEK in comission from installing this.

Drive-by-downloads are a dangerous thing. Most people I encounter get it from Facebook. Fortunately Malwarebytes can get rid of it in most cases.

My wife's was checking her email this week and sure enough, a window pops up warning her the computer is infected and asking her to install this anti virus software.
She called me right away. I started task manager and shut down Firefox.

It did not install but my anti virus picked up the executable on the hard drive a day later and nuked it.

Norton internet security works great for us on our 3 computers and right now you should be able to pick up a copy on sale for next to nothing, $20.00 or so. I highly recommend it.

It's sad. But lot of them really do look real to a regular user. The worse is open office. If you google that, you actually get some hacker site that claims to let you download open office. This shit needs to be illegal.

I've never felt for it but I'm sure lot of people do.

The users at my job are ALWAYS downloading this shit. Malwarebytes does a bang-up job of getting rid of 90% of it, however.
