I used one of these before. Only problem was that the dog kept telling me to start burying hookers in my backyard :Q

Believe it or not, this device (or something similar since I do not remember the company) was recently on the Today show and given some credibility.

This was in Popular Mechanics as a laughable technology that researchers say has no scientific basis. Didn't stop 120,000 of them being sold in Japan though.

But I don't own a Japanese dog, mine's French. Does it translate as well?

And how great would it be to hook this bad boy up to one of those Sony robotic dogs - I wonder if it would spit out strings of binary!

What they said on the Today show as that they analyzed the barks of lots (hundreds?) of dogs and tested their behavior, and figured out what they were saying. Then they imprinted this onto a computer chip. Then they validated the results somehow. Don't remember the details, I was on the treadmill at the time :-]

This was reviewed in our local paper recently and according to the reviewer, it was a total waste of money. You could get the exact same response from it even if you barked into it yourself. If is was $10 then it would be a great gag gift, but for $99, it has sucker written all over it.

The problem is that it is only built to translate into Japanese.
As in your $ --> Japanese wallets
