okay so i just gotmy Q6600 system up and running

programs using:
CPU-Z 1.42
Speedfan 4.33
core temp 0.9.0.91

system in specs

first time overclocking, i managed to get my FSB to 367 with a 9x multiplier
2.40 SPD multiplier giving me 440mhz ram... 5:6

does all this sound correct?

currently 15 mins prime95 BLEND stable (at least i dont think so, no popups. have round off checking enabled)

does this mean i got my cpu to 3.3ghz and ram @ 440mhz?

load temps are 50C according to speedfan in a 65F room

9*267=2403!, rated speed of Q6600, you should be able to take the FSB to 333 without a sweat for 3Ghz, and keep the 1:1 ram ratio. With your RAm rated @ DDR2 800, you should be good to clock the bus up to 400 and still have 1:1 ratio

Yes, this means you are running at 3.3 ghz, and yes you've got the right idea. What is your Vcore? Jumping to 400FSB would be pretty aggressive, but it may well be fine there with adequate voltage/cooling. I have a similar setup and got to around 360ghz fsb ~3250mhz with minimal increase in Vcore, then each small bump required generous voltage increases. I plan on this rig lasting me several years and don't want water cooling or screaming fans, so backed it to 356 at 1.26v with a 2.5 RAM divider, that is at 890mhz 4-4-4-15 @2v.

i just tried it with 400mhz fsb and Prime95 gave me errors with 2.7vcore

i'm currently at 390fsb prime95 stable.

what can i do to hit 400mhz?

You could try lapping...it's a stretch tho.

You can bump up the vcore, although im not sure what its at now because 2.7v would probably send your Q6600 flying through the wall.

Its a shame if it is the memory cause I wanted him to come back and post "So i didn't realize that 2.7v would catch my CPU/mobo on fire..."

That mobo isnt too great for overclocking quads in my experience, i could never get it stable over 360 fsb, even with watercooling on the northbridge and cpu.

1.27v isn't going to be enough for 400fsb. You are also going to run into higher voltage needs for the chipset/FSB for the MB to hit the 400 FSB which is out of it's "official" supported range. IF... IF your setup is going to do 400fsb/3.6ghz, you're gonna need some good cooling(meaning better than stock chipset and the Freezer 7pro). That is what I ran into. I figured the $200-300 for a solid watercooled setup wasn't worth the 300ish mhz clock speed it might allow for me.

I have a B3 stepping Q6600 on a S3 motherboard@400x8 no problems.....Not even active cooling on the NB. The GA-P35-DS3R should be much better than my old 965P-S3.

8*400 and 9*400 are two completely different things. And yeah, 1.27 is not enough vcore for 400FSB. You'll be lucky if you can get by with 1.40. And 2.7 for dim...I really fucking hope not. Check your BIOS and the sticky at the top of this forum. Don't fry your stuff.

Ok I'm currently prime 95 stable at 390x 9. 1.27 vcore 1:1 dram. Think its worth it to spend anpther hour or so trying to hit 400?

I would personally take the 3.5GHz as acceptable, especially with your low vcore.

What are your temps running?

If your memory volts are above 2.2, you will fry your sticks.

Are you stress testing all four cores at the same time? Make sure you are running the latest version of Prime95 with all four cores getting stressed.

Use Core Temp or Everest UE to monitor your temps. I find it hard to believe that your overclock temps are around 55 unless you got very very lucky, or lapped your CPU and Cooler.

EDIT... well in reviewing your earlier posts again, your temps might be right, if your CPU voltages are less than 1.3 If you can hit 390 FSB with 1.2 to 1.3 volts, you've got a winner chip.

My idle temps are 26c with open case and 65 room temps.
I AM running prime 95 v25. And what's a good vcore for 400 FSb?

CPU-Z is giving me 1.384 @ 400FSB, so in the BIOS it should probably be between 1.38 and 1.42. You might need more. Start with about 1.40 and see if you're stable after 2 hours of Prime95/Orthos (2 hours shout be enough for voltage-based stability). If you are, drop it down a notch and stress again. If all is well, you could try dropping it again, but if you're already below 1.40 you might as well sit tight.

Does the OP have a B3 or a G0? I can understand why Markfw900 has dropped his multiiplier to 8. With my B3, I got some stable over-clocks there pushing the CPU_FSB to around 390. But to go farther, I would've needed to loosen my memory timings.

So I'm sticking with the stock 9 muliplier and around 356. My crucials have nice, tight timings at that speed.
