In the US, Apple charges $1,100 for the upgrade. So it's still overpriced by a good 50%. Not as bad as some of Apple's upgrades. On that same computer, they charge $200 to upgrade to a 500 GB, 5400 RPM hard drive, even though you can buy such a hard drive separately for about $90. So they're charging over double the actual cost, and that's before you even consider the fact that it's an upgrade (i.e., they're removing the stock 160 GB hard drive and adding a 500 GB one).

So your logic is, OP complains about Apple adding 6Gb of ram for ~1400$, newegg sells 8Gb total for 700$, somehow Newegg is as bad as Apple for selling more ram for half the price???

Nope, it's $700.

See my edited earlier post. Apple's still overcharging by 50%, which is a lot, but not as much as they usually do. Normally they charge 2-3x as much as it costs to buy the components yourself.

Every computer seller overcharges for custom options, but Apple is the worst.

My neighbor paid Dell $115 (recently) to go from an 80 to 500gb HD. That's a little over 2 times the price of a 500gb drive on Newegg. So he could have gotten 2 500's, kept the 80 and still have enough left over to go get lunch. Using this logic, Apple is doing nothing different than Dell. Bottom line, all computer makers charge too much for upgrades, this is nothing new.

US market price for 2x4GB of RAM (NewEgg.com): $700
US Apple BTO price: $1,100
Price increase: 57%

UK market price for 2x4GB of RAM: £539 (http://www.ebuyer.com/search?p...subcat=2867&ca630=8GB)), or $886 in US dollars
UK Apple BTO price: £880, or $1,446 in US dollars
Price increase: 63%

Stuff is more expensive in the UK because of VAT and some other factors, but Apple adds a similar surcharge to everything you buy as a BTO option. The only Macs you should buy are the lowest end models because the higher end ones generally cost several hundred extra for maybe $100 worth of upgrades.
