I don't know if the question was directed towards me, but I have 10GB of RAM. My Mac Pro is used as a Digital Audio Workstation with Logic Pro 8 running at 24/96. I use software samplers and software instruments with HUGE audio files; Toontrack's Superior Drummer 2.0 and loads of East/West Quantum Leap sound libraries to include EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Platinum Pro. If you understand what I just said, then I'll have answered your question.

I envy you, I wish I could afford a Mac Pro with Logic. I use a PC with Reason, and it's nowhere near as good. A DAW on a PC is pretty much teh fails Well, I know Reason isn't a DAW, but even Cubase or ProTools isn't as good. DAMN APPLE to hell for buying Logic. It should still be a PC program too

No need for the envy, brah. There's a huge learning curve with Logic as well as Mac OS X for me. I'm coming from a fairly stable PC running Sonar 4 with an M-Audio Delta 1010 interface. I'm running a Apogee Ensemble with the Mac. It's nice, I won't lie.

East West developed their own software sampler (PLAY) and I knew my PC wasn't going to be able to handle it; dual-core, 2.8 GHz AMD plus the RAM restrictions with WinXP Pro. I just didn't feel like going through the huge task of building a new PC DAW and most of the pre-built, audio application PCs weren't to my liking. So...I went Mac. I'm happy with the decision and have a great system that's been really stable and will handle playback of loads of soft samplers.

Anything worth learning will have a big curve. I wouldn't exactly say Reason is easy. Easier? Probably, but Logic is so much more powerful. Besides all of the industries top producers, minus a bizzare few. Use a Mac. I can never become a super producer if I'm stuck with a PC. Apparently Protools HD 8 is very good, but it's still not a Mac if it's on a PC.

It seems Macs are best for really high pro equipment for content creators who know what they're doing, and for yuppies who have too much money.

Yes, the vast majority of laptops can only take two modules. There might be a few big desktop-replacement models that can take four modules, but it's not the norm.

yep. my boss picked up a new macbook pro 17" a few weeks ago, and "needed" the 8gb. (she actually did, considering the sequencing she plans to run).

it is a bit cheaper in the states, they charged $800 to go from standard of 4gb to 8gb. However, she went straight to the Mac store in SF (needed immediately), and they freaking charged her $200 just to install the memory. ridiculous. And I thought Best Buy charging $50 for that was absurd.

This is indeed why Apple sucks

Is that why the values in the bolded text that you chopped are in dollars?

Yes the UK prices for everything are typically higher and the prices shown include VAT (taxes), unless they specify ex VAT.

Meh, I thought we were talking about the RAM here. Didn't even notice the part about the hard drive.

Well... I went to Dell to compare and it seems that they only sell one laptop that can hold 8 gig and it starts $2398.

Went to HP and again doesn't look like I can get an 8 gig lap top, although their web page sucks because you can't search via memory etc.

Perhaps someone else can offer an alternative company that offers a similar lap top with 8 gigs and we can compare their upgrade cost to Apple's.

And Dell is overpriced. You can get them for less.

I just don't know why people are happy with such low resolutions on a laptop... the thing sits right in front of you! I wish I could find an inexpensive laptop with a 15" 1600x1200 screen like my old Dell Inspiron 8200.

I'm getting to a point where I actually like Apple. They're no danger to me; I'll never buy their products. They provide comic relief and affirmation of my financial intelligence; there's nothing quite like eyeballing my $$ bank account $$, then reading about how some poor chump had to borrow money for rent because he bought the $600 iDesk and a stylish $7,000 internet & email machine. Moreover, they provide backup computing insurance in case Microsoft really, REALLY, REALLY fucks up.

mugs. I got an inspiron 1525 with something similar. Got it with the Dads and Grads sale last year for around 700 including shipping and taxes. Fit and finish kind of suck. But the specs are pretty decent (for that time anyway), and the resolution is 1680x1050 on a 15.4.
I intended it to be a secondary machine. My desktop was always first. However I am using my laptop 99% of the time, and I wish I got a Studio with a 1080p-ish resolution.
I don't see how people with 15" + laptops can live with 1440x900. It makes me sad.

That desk... is terrible. I could see it being useful if you live in a studio apartment, but that thing is ugly.

So is every service pack from Apple.

We're at 10.5.7 right now with Leopard.
Snow Leopard will be 10.6.

I just checked Lenovo's site and they charge $1,210 to go from 1 GB to 8 GB on a laptop. For comparison, it's $710 to go to 6 GB, $580 to have a single 4 GB module, and $150 to go to 2x2 GB modules.
