Updated two Nexus 7's this week. Fantastic update. Especially since Lollipop now lets you use Chromecast to it's full potential. Casting photos is nearly instantaneous and requires no additional app (which all sucked for Chromecast). Casting music now lets you play side-loaded songs which was stupidly banned in earlier Android versions. Browsing on a big screen TV is much better than the smallish 7 screen. No problems at all so far.

The only oddity was that one Nexus 7 was allowed to update two days before the other one.

It seems like standby life has increased from 4.4.4 to 5.0.1. Great update for the N7 13!

But I'm on WiFi!!!! Wtf is going on 😥

My 2013 N7 wifi-only still has not showed the update.. Google gets worse and worse with their shitty rollouts. Credit to where it's due, but Apple has their shit together on rolling out OS updates compared to Google.

Okay thanks! That makes me feel better. I thought it was only my device for some reason. I have a 2013 Nexus 7 WiFi also.

My N7 2013 WiFi wasn't showing the update, so I updated it manually. The hardest part was finding platform tools, as I didn't want to install Java just to download the tools. Then I remembered I downloaded it earlier to screw around with my Nexus Player. It was fairly painless, except the device was essentially reset and I have to re-enter info for various apps. I don't have many apps, so it isn't that big of a deal.

Could have sideloaded the OTA, it's widely available.

You would have kept your data.

I'm fairly new to doing this stuff on Android, but thats good to know. The sites I looked at implied the method I did was the only way, although in retrospect those articles were over a month old. I don't use the N7 much...just in the bathroom and as a master remote control, so losing the data wasn't a big deal.

Damn it when it the update going to come to the N5. I even submitted feedback thru the Send feedback about this device in the About Phone section. Never had such a crappy experience with an update iOS/Android before this pos.

Google has released the update for the Nexus 5. The factory images are available for you to download and image manually. If you are whining about OTA update and are that impatient... then quit whining like a little girl. Be a man and LEARN how update it yourself. If you are a girl, then whine at your boyfriend to do it.

 Yeah, that's it dumbass. When the N5 is one of most affected by this update, you'd expect it to be pushed OTA sooner than later.

edit - the factory image for download was only made available earlier on 12/16 which makes your comments even more stupid. Sorry for not being a man to not have googled for the news update yesterday, when I would have expected you to post that it was available here.

And then your phone is messed up because EVERY major iOS update breaks phones immediately on release. Google slowly rolls out updates for this very reason.

That's odd, my two iPhone5's had every single update and they kept working just fine, and so do my Windows Phones with every update. And yet, I have had more problems just getting non-buggy and timely updates on my Android devices by far and I actually like Android. I have 6 AT&T lines, 2 Apple, 2 Winphones, 2 Android that were all purchased and had service started around the same time about 1.5 years ago so I've watched the OS's evolve side-by-side on each of the different phones OS's closely. Just because IOS or Winphone might not be your favorite OS, doesn't mean they don't do certain things better than Google.

The whiners should stop.

As has been said, the factory images are available. Android-centric websites have the OTA's within days of the rollout. While Android is trying to become more user-friendly, it also has largely retained the ability for owners to take matters into their own hands.

So, instead of being a passive whiner, just do something about it.

Staged rollouts have saved Google a couple show-stoppers from shipping. The same can't be said of Apple. And when will people learn that one-off anecdotal evidence counts for crap?

You got it, and it works the other way around as well: just because *your* android tablet doesn't get update yet, it doesn't mean that Google is 'shitty' (your word).

5.0 was available for over a month for the N5. 5.01 was available 12/15 afternoon PST. Like a little girl I got giddy and updated right away.

Using the word 'dumbass' gives us a rough idea of your age, but the word 'stupid' narrows it whole lot more. I hear 10 year olds in my family make fun of each other with more wit.

Perhaps it is best if you wait for the OTA. My advice is for you to whine tears at your cell phone provider. They at times will not allow OTA updates unless they test it 1st.

My written opinion on a singular process (the Lollipop roll out) does not equate to an attack on an entire company ("Google is 'shitty"). Hopefully you simply read it incorrectly and did not knowingly attribute my particular process criticism incorrectly to simply make some sort of Google fanboy point.

I just got the OTA 5.0.1 update on my N4 (which was already running 5.0 from a previous OTA update).

Apple ALWAYS has to release a hot fix because the new OS breaks things. It's just how it is.

Do you think the new icons will eventually be animated?

I think the whole "Material" theme was designed with (future) animations in mind. Which is a good thing because you can only contain as much information in static icons and sidebars. Imagine arrows wiggling, magnifier pulsating, or bell icons actually trembling. Animations can help greatly those unfamiliar with the interface and technology in general. I hope such features will not be a subject of patents.
