Long access times on my WD 2TB passport HDD

I have a WD 2TB 3.0 USB Passport HDD as shown in the link below. It is about 1.25 years old.

http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Port...d=1393619356&sr=1-1&keywords=wd+2+tb+passport

Lately, I've noticed that it's taking a considerable amount of time to access files from it, specifically video files. For example, I've got some old episodes of The Office I keep on there and I remember it used to take a few seconds for the HDD to spin up and then play it. Now, it takes like 15-20 seconds to access it and you can see the "green loading bar" on the folder (Windows 7) slowly progressing. Larger movie rips take even longer to open.

Other smaller files like word docs, excel, etc open fine which I guess makes sense since they are only a few Kb in size.

Is my HDD dying? I haven't touched any settings or changed anything since I bought it. Any program I can run to check its health?

Thanks.

Check your event log for any errors/warnings, and also check the SMART data of the drive in question. Something like Crystaldiskinfo (portable version) will check that.

I'd start by checking if /indexing is turned off for that disk. I really don't know all the symptoms of indexing never looked it up, i always just disable it tho.

and also which usb port your connecting it to and which cable your using, before assuming anything bad actually with the drive itself.

I think it's dying run the wd diagnostic

Just ran all the diagnostics from the WD tools found from the HDD itself. (SMART, Quick Drive Test, and Complete Drive Test), all passed.

Just checked the event log, nothing related to my HDD.

How do you check that indexing is on or off? I'm using one of my USB 3.0 ports and the cable it came with.

So, I played around with the drive more and it seems it's only one set of folders and files that's having the slow read times. All other files (large or small) are accessed within a second or two. I'll have to look into this more, could just be those specific files, but I could have sworn any large files on the drive were taking a long time to access.
