Hello all.

I am getting ready to break ground on my new house. On the exact opposite side of the golf course lives my father-in-law. We have been tossing about the idea of trying to share my internet connection via wireless. Distance is 1800-2000ft.

Any thoughts as to an antenna config that might have a chance of doing the trick, ie a pair of cantennas or such? Is it in the realm of the likely doable, or is 2000ft a bit too much?

Line of sight is blocked by a small patch of light woods. This is something of a 'just-for-fun' project, but we have no aversion to buying a pair of antennas and roof-mounting them.

Thx in advance for your thoughts.

if you can't see the other side "line of sight with binoculars" then it ain't gonna work.

If you can, then two cantennas should be fine.

Ok. If I wrap a cat5 around my b1tch mother-in-law's neck and hang her from one of the trees, with a cantenna duct-taped to her skull, think that would help?

In more ways than one.

It depends on a lot of things, including how thick the woods are. I've got a nice connection with my neighbor, who is about 1000 ft away, with a solid row of 35ft evergreen trees between us completely blocking the line of site between us (that is, the trees are in a single row that might be about 15ft thick at the base). We each have a Linksys WAP54G (one in access point mode and the other in AP Client mode). I have an 18db directional patch antenna (about $50 from www.hyperlinktech.com). Signal strength is 42% and fast enough to stream dvds (DU Meter shows max speeds of 15Mbps). He's going to pick up an high gain yagi antenna with hopes of getting the signal strength to over 60%. Linksys stuff is nice because there are firmware hacks that allow you to increase the default power by significant margins (although we haven't ventured into such territory yet).
