FO4 is an outlier, but still an interesting outlier.
Yeah, appears so, for sure. Hard to justify and entire platform update (as would be the case for me) for just one game. Those are very interesting results though, and it would be good to see some deeper analysis.

As for the RAM affecting framerates I'm going to do some tests myself between 1600Mhz CL9 and 2400Mhz CL10. I have both a new 970 and 390 to see how both cards react to different RAM speeds using a 4790K. I'll start a new thread and it'll take some time to do the testing but if anyone has specific game requests let me know.

Not sure if it's possible or even of any practical use but i'd be interested to see if there's any great difference in a VRAM limited scenario. If you could manage to get something running that takes more than the VRAM on the card (ultra texture mods and high resolution maybe? Gobs of AA?) then we could see if there's a really noticeable difference between the two RAM speeds for this purpose.

Might be the case that a cheap RAM upgrade could slightly improve the usability of some of the 2GB cards.

The bandwidth doesn't concern me so much as the latency. It's a long trip from GPU to main RAM, unless it's an igp.

It does for FO4. FO4 is extremely sensitive to memory speeds even with non-Skylake CPUs. We even see an increase on Bulldozer. Per TechSpot an i3 with DDR3-2400 blows the doors off an i7 4770K with DDR3-1333:

But I wouldn't spend any more $ on faster DDR3 for the OP. Just get a new GPU and then do a full blown DDR4 platform update.

Wholly crap!!!

Thats insane.

I dont understand freesync range from 40FPS+...IMO, 40+ isnt a stutter fest whereas 30-40 is, where G-Sync plays.

Hard yes but not impossible....
jk but seriously, I'll buy FAR faster ram now that games are starting to show performance benefits from it nextgen. My 4770k sucks now because of DDR1600 ram now.
I'm almost FX8350 peasant status....

That's enough of a reason to upgrade by itself!

Haha, I'm joking, but I'm kind of serious....

You can find FreeSync monitors that go lower than 45~ now. Nixeus just released a very affordable ($300) 1080p 144hz FS monitor that goes from 30-144. Pretty slick looking.

Lots of the FS monitors @ 45 can actually be "overclocked" (firmware modified) to run at lower than that. Some of the popular early FS monitors can get down to the low 30's.

The refresh rate limits are decided entirely by the monitor maker.

You could upgrade the RAM on the cheap if you sell your existing DDR3 sticks. I didn't realize how much 16GB DDR3-2400 has fallen in price vs. 1600.

$70
$71
$72

That's without any special sales.

- Some FreeSync monitors can do 30Hz
- Most FreeSync monitors are $100-200 cheaper than GSync
- The OP already has a FreeSync monitor so how is your comment helping him with a GPU upgrade unless you are implying he should sell his monitor, get a GSync one + GTX970?

Got the Sapphire Nitro 390 installed and configured. A little sketchy there for a minute as I had no video signal. I had to reset the CMOS then it worked like a charm.

I have to say, I'm glad I went with the upgrade. Games are much smoother and despite arguments to the contrary it does help to play better in multiplayer titles.

I'm still getting used to the AMD drivers and software, after using Nvidia for so long. Seems like the Gaming Evolved app isn't quite as good at optimizing games as Geforce Experience was, but I'm still messing with it.

Thanks for everyone's help! Definitely glad I got your input before I purchased. Also definitely glad I can get the most out of a pricey monitor. Now, if I could just find a KVM that worked!
