But - wouldn't that be an unsolicited e-mail, and by definition therefore "spamming?":Q

DanC is correct, Russ sending him an email to recruit would be spamming (under Dnet's view of the world). What would not be spamming is LANMAN sending an email with congrats and a query about what sort of computing power is behind the numbers. If a couple of emails get exchanged, then maybe TA will get talked about.

Gee, there's the answer to the whole thing... right under our noses. Seems the same rule would apply to anyone?

The subtle thing is that there can't be a direct recruiting message in the initial emails. If you're honestly interested in what they're running and interested in Distributed Computing in general, then I doubt that Dnet would care.

So no form letter, no mass mailings and each person decides what to do on their own.

Michael

ps - if I were to recruit, I wouldn't mess with "big guns". They obviously know what they're doing. I would go after people just starting out, with a couple of weeks of cracking on only a machine or two. They're probably the type of person who could use the help this forum and this team could give them.

If it has nothing to do with this... why post?
You will not quickly endear yourself to TA members by entering our forum and calling things lame. Play nice, or stay out.

DanC: I just think stuff like this isn't excactly fairplay.. that's all
and euhhm.. I'm indeed new in this forum, but does that mean I can't state my opinion? That's al it was btw, my (not so humble) opinion.

But just in case.. i'll play it nice for the first couple 100 posts, ok?

poohke - You can send private messages on this BBS. If you think that my suggestion would be violating Dnet's rules, that's one thing and I'd be happy to hear your point of view.

If you just don't like the idea but it has nothing to do with your team, then why post in the public forum? My email address is available in my profile and, like I said, you could send a private message.

Michael

ps - you can call me names in email or private messages if you want, I have a pretty thick skin. <grin>

if you write your opinion in other words you might not be interpreted
as a pain in the but.wouldn`t you try to do the same ?

Guy's,

Two thoughts:

1. I think a simple invitation to somebody interested in distributed computing to come to the forum and participate, without any real or implied obligation, is a nice gesture.

2. I seem to recall dnet saying that they would be unhappy if you used an email address that they had published for any purpose whatsoever. (May not have that quite correct, in fact, makes you wonder why they publish them at all?)

Placed in the correct thread - ......eventually

I like Michael's idea, I would LOVE to know what kind of heard is necessary to produce 166,000 blocks in a single day. Hell I think we should invite him to our forums with no obligations to joining our team.

Michael: indeed I was venting a personal opinion that had nothing to do with whatever team I'm working for.
Why do I post in in this public forum then? Well, to be honest, I thought it was the idea of forums like this to be able to discuss about stuff like this and get idea's from different people with different idea's.
Also it was not my meaning AT ALL to step on someone toes altough I still think it's not quite fairplay to invite someone like that just because he's a heavy cracker.
An invitation like mindless is stating, again IMHO, is way better.
I hope you don't hold it against me for having a different opinion and stating this in a public forum.. My fault is indeed the way I statud it, sorry bout that, won't happen again (I hope )

It wasn't your opinion, it was the fact that you're from another team and stated your opinion while saying you're from another team. Plus, you said the idea was "lame" (which is insulting, btw) without any reasoning behind it.

NOTE - EXAMPLE BELOW THAT DOES NOT REFLECT MY OPINION AND EVEN IF IT DID (WHICH IT DOESN'T), IT IS JUST MY OPINION

If I popped onto the DPC's forum and posted that "MF6 was a lame attempt at getting attention" in the middle of a DPC discussion of how to coordinate the flush, I'd be able to feel the heat from the flames all the way here in California.

To be clear, I know the MF's were an early recruiting tactic of the DPC's back when they first started and wanted to pop to the top of the daily rankings and the latest is just part of the tradition.

END OF EXAMPLE, WE RETURN TO MICHAEL'S REGULARILY SCHEDULED OPINION

Even saying that you find it to be "unfair" doesn't mean anything to me. Unfair in what way? What rule or general agreement does it violate? This forum exists to help people (and that includes the DPC's) do the best they can at Distriuted Computing projects. If we want to steer more people here and some join TA as a result, how is that "unfair"?

Just so you know, I'm Canadian from Montreal so I grew up speaking English (native) and French (fluid second language). I lived in Wyckoff, NJ for about 5 years when I first moved to the NYC area (notice the Dutch name of the town). I worked in New York City for a couple of years and I know that is used to be called "New Amsterdam" and New York basketball fans cheer for the "Knicks" which is short for Knickerbocker which I think is Dutch as well.

I know that the USA took many Dutch traits and wove them into the whole that makes it "American", so I have a built-in respect and appreciation for the Dutch.

Even with all that and my not wanting to see troll in every post, I still thought to myself "why the heck would he pop in and post what he did"? Think a little about the context of what you posted and imagine if I did the same in the middle of a discussion you were having on your home board (uninvited, negative opinion with no reasoning behind it).

That's why I suggested that a private message or email would have been better.
