when you need something healthy to get you through when you need a meal, what do you guys grab? i've been using clif's builder's bar for when i've got classes that run longer than 3 hours. what else is high in protein, and relatively low in fat and carbs while tasting decent?

Genisoy. Problem is, they're really yummy, and you'll end up eating them a lot more than you need to.

When I'm traveling for work I often times go to Walmart and buy Met-Rx Protein Plus Protein Bars (32g protein). (A little over $2 a bar when purchased individually) They taste better than a lot of the bars I've tried.

Power Bar Protein Plus, either the vanilla yogurt or the double chocolate (reduced sugar) flavors. Both are pretty good "emergency food".

Think Thin bars from whole foods or elsewhere, no sugar and 20g protein. Builder bars are great, but plenty of sugar unfortunately (I do get them occasionally for a treat)

Met-RX protein bars. They were pretty good. Then the university market stopped stocking them. Now all they have are energy and nutrition bars! GAh!

Make your own. Scroll through that thread and you should be able to come up with plenty of ideas.

I make my own, they taste better and cost less. Plus I know exactly what goes into them.

I used to buy Met-RX high protein bars, but unfortunately I can't find them without chocolate and sucralose. (The bars used to have just sugar but were reformulated.) I'd like to find a bar that uses regular old sugar and doesn't have any chocolate or peanuts. I won't buy PowerBars because I had one give me terrible stomach pain once.

The problem I have with all protein bars is they either taste too artificial and/or they contain too much fat. Most are just candy bars with 20-30g of protein thrown in.

That said, I think Chef Jays are the best. Make sure to have some water handy when you eat them, because they will dry your mouth out quite a bit.

I did this, they do taste great and have lots more protein than most commercially-available bars. I enjoy Clif bars just for the taste and the low cost.

Why do you eat protein bars? -I'm curious. I just drink soy milk for extra protein. As far as I have read it's as good as whey/casein, possibly better as a complete protein package without the cholesterol. (I don't know much about that though)

On long endurance stuff I generally eat bananas, possibly an oatmeal bar but I have protein only after I work out. I used to eat METRx bars but I felt better when I ate simple bananas. Powerbars were even worse. They felt like logs in my gut. Any thoughts?

I eat Zone perfect and Balance protein bars at work since they are free. I also eat a slice of pepper jack and 8 wheat thins as a snack. I work from 5:30am to 11:30am so I get hungry. They also have bananas and apples from time to time. I figured what I eat is better than the cheesits and Doritos some people here eat.

I only eat protein bars when I am traveling or in a position where I will be walking around all day without access to food. It's too much of a PITA to prepare and carry a ton of meals around in these cases, so I just pack a few high calorie protien bars and eat one every few hours.

You'd have to drink a lot of soy milk to equal the amount of protein you get from a milk+whey powder shake.

I use Syntrax Nectar Chocolate Truffle. A bit expensive, but ridiculously tasty with milk, virtually no fat, no carbs and (supposedly) very healthy and high quality protein.

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Vanilla Ice Cream. Tasted good enough for all of my shakes / smoothies.

ProLab Pure Whey, buy it in the 5lb jugs. I've heard good things about Optimum Nutrition, but still haven't had a chance to drink any.

I mean I use this for my power protein source, but sometimes, I just can't be f*ed to have powder and skim milk on hand... so I use a bar for convenience...

I thought this thread was about protein bars? I eat Zone Perfect bars. They're not really protein bars, 23g carbs, 14g protein, 7g fat, but they do the trick and don't taste that bad.

As far as protein sources, I drink Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey. I just got the Vanilla Chai flavor and it is DELICIOUS. Although I could see myself getting sick of it after a few months, right now it tastes like a blended graham cracker. I mix it up with Costco Soy Milk. I've had Chocolate and Strawberry too. Not a big fan of chocolate overall, but it was pretty good, and the Strawberry was very good too.

I eat the Pure Protein bars they have at safeway and trader joes.
They are whey protein isolate, unlike concentrate and soy protein of most other bars, and they aren't loaded with sugar, plus they are often on sale.

If you are looking for ones to use while cutting ISS Oh YEah bars, or VPX Zero Impact are the best, especially for Keto diets...but otherwise I also try to stay away from them because they are bascially shit with extra protein in them, bad sugars etc.

Is it really hard to just carry around a meal in a small ziploc baggy?
