In terms of music, movies and entertainment.

In the pre late 90s era, Indian music and movies had a sense of genuine-ness, even though they were influenced by the West. They had a lot of Indian subtleties to them. They were careful, thoughtful and even somewhat deep in their music/entertainment. You could even use the word "talent" to describe some of the artists. They were serious people, at least from what I've gathered. After the 90s, it's all about sound effects, direct imitation of the West, open sexuality and so forth.

Here is a musical clip from a movie from the 1960s:

And one from 2012, I think:

Quite a difference.

And yet, India thinks its on the upward swing.

Still better than Mamma Mia! Just kidding, I like Mamma Mia! Consider this, in the USA we have Duck Dynasty, so India is still way ahead.

It's interesting that when more technology and other additional "aid" comes into the picture, the real quality drops. The dance moves in the new "Bollywood" movies might be edgier, the women may have a lot less clothes, the sound effects might be a lot better ... but what about the actual content?

Unfortunately, it seems like Indians are more concerned with the visual aesthetics than anything else. The entire country seems to be very confused. One side wants to keep the ancient traditions while the other side wants to abandon them and be totally Western.

A culture of a country often reflects upon its arts and many other areas.

Interesting that in the old Indian musical clips, there was a lot of nature involved - a lot of mountains, trees, lakes, etc. Lots of beautiful landscapes. Now that Indians are more modernized, all that is out the door. They want to see clubs, dance floors, streets, buildings instead.

Just some differences in how society has changed in the past few decades. Moving from one side to the other and calling it modernism or whatever they call it now.

Came into this thread thinking (or hoping) it had something to do with the caste system or effective measures against corruption...

Nope. Musicals, entertainment. *sigh*

Well, that's why one should not have expectations as you're bound to be disappointed.

As for corruption - how can there be effective measures against it when it is WE the people who create corruption in the first place? Do we create effective measures against ourselves? But this is not the right thread for that. I think there is some other caste or whatever thread that you can post in please.

BTW, everything is a reflection of how people live. This includes music, entertainment, art, etc. So the entertainment part is not in a vacuum by itself.

Just watched Scam City: Mumbai the other day.
It made me sick seeing the elaborate scams they pull on tourists. Setting up roadblocks in front of taxis that they say are "religious practices" and they will only move if you pay them. Of course the taxi driver is in on it and drives a specific out-of-the-way route. And then there's the "travel agent", the fake cops, the "talent scout" for Bollywood movies and other disgusting scammers.
I was surprised the only "scams" he found in NYC were fake perfumes (duh!) and the retards that dress up as characters to scam you for picture money.
Great show!
