I could speak for him and say "enjoying one of the few rights we have left and wont have much longer" but that would probably spark another debate.

Nah, I predict many long, long years of guns in America's future. That's one right that too many Americans care about too much to be taken away. Stuff like privacy and free speech don't seem to be as important as owning an automatic rifle to some people. Frankly I find that appalling, but there's so little that can be done in apathetic america today. We're literally being stripped of our rights one by one and there aren't enough people to stand up and do something about it.

It's simple. I can say and do whatever I want because I have a gun. The 2nd amendment secures the others.

err, you only have the right to bear arms, not to keep guns in your house with the kids!! :|

Actually, the second amendment prohibits the infringement of the right to keep and bear arms.

To the OP: Nice gun. What manufacturer did you get. I myself just ordered a Bushmaster XM15 M4 Carbine with the A3 upper. Had to get one with the fixed telestock and Izzy muzzle break vs compensator and 10 round mag since NY has sucky AWB laws still in place. The barrel is 14.5 inches long, but with the permanently attached Izzy break it is 16.

I can't wait to get it and put a few boxes of ammo through it.

You can build AKs. All imported kits have their receivers cut or torched so that rewelding is impossible (or insanely hard).

Lots of people build up those kits with receiver flats that they bend into shape for use (no license required). Add the mandated US parts count and voila, new fully legal semi-auto AK. You don't get into trouble with the law until you try to sell it....

Or you can pony up the $80+FFL charge and buy a US made receiver to build on, making life a lot easier on yourself.

Agreed. I have noticed lately though, that most of the gun threads have been relatively crap free. Maybe, and this is very wishful thinking, we've got it into their thick skulls that guns are not bad, and are a very useful tool to own.

Actually, my views on gun ownership have changed lately. I went from being anti gun to being neutral on gun ownership. I dont want to turn this into some flaming war like every other gun ownership thread. I just dont understand why someone would buy a gun that big.

I'm glad to hear you've started to change your views a bit. Since you are acting reasonable (unlike most of the anti-gun crowd) I'll offer a bit of help to you on your question.

The AR-15 is primarily a sport rifle. It gets its roots from the militaries M-16. Most people purchase them as part of the hobby of gun ownership. They are inexpensive to build/buy (less than $1000), inexpensive to upkeep, and inexpensive to shoot. They are also a very fun gun to shoot. With the little recoil that they produce, you are able to empty an entire clip into a decent size grouping. I am far from an expert on the weapons, but if you want more info, check out AR-15.com
