Morning. I've been looking for a Jeep off an on for a while. Just more of a fun toy / weekend vehicle / occasional daily driver. Maybe some mild off roading like trail riding, ect. My uncle told me about a buddy who has a 1998 Jeep Wrangler for sale.
It has the original 4.0 engine with 211k miles with a 5 speed manual. The engine sounds strong. No ticks / knocks. Shifted through the gears fine. Floor pans look solid. Only real rust issue is the drivers side fender up in the front. There is some minor rust at normal places like hinges and what not. New break lines, drums and shoes. Tires are pretty decent. It could use a front end alignment. New radiator. It has a hard top and they just put new glass on it but it looks like there was something missing along the bottom edge. Is there supposed to be some type of rubber gasket on the bottom?
I'm curious to hear ATG's thoughts on the engine / transmission. Considering the higher miles. How solid are these engines? My budget is $5000-ish and he is asking $4000 but if I move on it I'm thinking of starting closer to $3000-$3200. Is there anything else I should ask / check out on the vehicle? Any other gotchas I should know about?
Completely forgot to grab some pictures when I looked at it.
