There were times where I used the rear break when turning. Bad idea, did not fall but you feel like you are going to topple over. It's best to reduce speed as much as you think you are comfortable at, then turn. I like my 250. Since I got it I put 2 scratches on it and like others said , next summer if I want I could probably sell it for 2k or a little more. It's got such low mileage for an 09.

My buddy has a sv 650 twin s or twin v I forget. I'm not athletic built so balancing that thing is tough. I'm tall and skinny and I have to be on my toes if I sit on his bike. I like it better when my feet reach the ground.

How tall do you consider tall? Because I can easily flat foot an SV650 and I'm 5'11" barefoot. Go sit on a 2012 Ducati Multistrada 1200 and get back to me. I can't flat foot that bike but I love it and I want one.

Maybe it was my shoes but I wasn't tippy toeing on the 650. It's deff higher than my 250. I'm pretty sure his is raised a bit too. Yeh a 1200 I wouldn't be flatfooting.
I'm 5'11 too,
I guess because I'm not a big person I don't feel comfy on that bike.

Really? I'm 5'9 barefoot and I had no problem handling the sv650. Nor my gsxr600. But I never got nervous either just putting most weight on one foot. I'm pretty sure I flatfooted the sv though.

Quite frankly I don't see why people are so against learning safely on a 250 when you can sell it at the end of the season for same price you bought it or maybe $100-200 less. Why be stupid with your life? This sport is dangerous enough as it is.

This ^^^ is really good advice!

I'm 5'6" and have no problem with my SV650, and also no problem with my Daytona 675, which is even taller. As a newbie, it might be a little daunting... but once you have any amount of experience, if you're working hard to keep the bike balanced, you're doing something wrong.

There is no need to pick up 600cc bike when you can get a perfect grey area bike like an sv650. This is probably the best comment in a very good thread.

update :

Been looking test driving a few, and found a 2008 SV650S with 2300 miles on it...100% stock, 1 owner. Guy was real nice, drove about 50 miles to see it, grabbed cash on the way...tested it, rock solid. Had my motorcycle buddy test it, good to go. Paid him $3000 for it, clean title too. Then I drove it 50 miles home! No better way to learn to ride then just do it.

here it is next to my GF's new scooter

Very nice. I'm paranoid, so I'd want to check any rubber bits (coolant hoses mainly) given that the bike obviously sat a lot. Machines don't like not being used and rubber bits tend to harden sometimes. 99% chance you're fine, but like I say, I'm paranoid.

Now get out there and put miles on it. I've been a slacker and only have about 3,000 on my bike this season.

Congrats man. I sold my 2008 SV650N for a hair under $4k last summer and it had almost 17,000 miles on it (I bought it new). You did good.

One word of advice, if that thing is still rolling on the OEM rubber I'd change it. Those tires were not very good. After about 3,500 miles I no longer felt comfortable pushing them hard into corners... and I put that many miles on mine in the first 6 months I owned it.

Go join svrider.com. Very active website for SV owners. I still post there from time to time. Just don't ask for advice on how to wheelie or tell tales of laws you broke or expect sympathy for any tickets you receive. Those threads never end well for the OP.

Oh, and if you want to really improve the sound of that bike and drop about 10lbs lose that stock muffler and put an M4 slip-on pipe on there. I had one on mine and it sounded great. Very throaty but not overly loud. It looks good too. Plus, no need for a remap with the slip-on.

Wow nice find! Enjoy it and if you leave it outside I reccomend a dowco cover.

I'm thinking of selling my 250 next summer. It should have about 1500 miles on it, its a 2009. Has two scratches on the right upper fairing and on the brake handle. Fell over when I had it parked on uneven road, now I always park it facing the opposite way.

I should get at least 2k for it right? Tires still have great tread too.

That is what I was thinking, 4 years old seems weird! I might run them a little longer, see how they feel still, then replace them if it's weird...the tread is solid though, almost brand new, haha. I checked most hoses/clamp areas, there is some orange around the area, but they were movable and reclampable no problem.

There was one sharp corner where someone braked hard in front of me to turn, so I did the same ... but dowshifted and not braked very hard, and I felt the rear slide out a little maybe? It was fine after a second or two, corrected itself.

I want to integrate rear lights, and front lights, then get a different exhaust that hopefully gets better mileage, and looks a little better..I don't want LOUD though, haha. Any advice there?

sze5003 dowco is already on order .. got a dowco for the GF and loved it's fitment.

Congratulations! This thread really delivers!

Agreed, I do feel perfectly safe on it too, I don't think I would have liked a 250 though, but like I said in the OP and other posts, I have ridden a little bit before so a 650 vtwin while work out for me as my commuter...

forgot to mention he included chain cleaner, fuel stabilizer, 3 oil changes worth of oil, and trickle charger for the winter/storage.

Wow he included all that? Great your set. The all weather dowco cover really is excellent. My bike is next to my apartment and stays outside so the all weather plus cover really is doing its job. Had a downpour and crazy winds here past few days. Not even the tires got wet bike is bone dry.

I wonder if before winter comes should I take the carbs out and drain them again? It's going to be a pain.
If the bike is going to be outside what do you guys do to prepare for winter?

Dude, M4. I already mentioned that and even put a pic of my bike with that pipe on it!

A pipe isn't going to make any difference with mileage. In fact, it might hurt the mileage a bit if anything. I averaged around 45 romping on it. That was the worst I could do in city riding. Out in the mountains and canyons I'd typically get closer to 50mpg.

You could just run the bike with the fuel shut off until it stops running. Honestly, I'd just put fuel stabilizer in it and top it up. Cover the bike as best you can to seal it from the weather. I'd remove the battery and store it inside and keep it on a battery tender.
