though there is nothing inherently wrong with getting your cheapass monitor, there is a flaw in that desire. specifications and quality wise, most monitors are the same. only so many factories actually make tubes... and here is where the flaw comes in, name brand monitors usually last longer than no name brands. that is to say, most monitors made by name brands last longer than most no name monitors.

narrow down to the price and brand\model you want. I am sure the above posts are helpful.

THEN, go to a site like http://www.deja.com or http://www.computers.com where you can get user feedback on the models. of course some models have never been commented on...

of course you can use computers.com as well as http://www.shopper.com or http://www.pricewatch.com to find good prices

THEN, go to http://www.resellerratings.com to see if the vendor is good.

so far, the AV-195TF is looking pretty good.

I may get another 19" myself... to replace the dinky 15" secondary monitor I have.

The only problem with the pricewatch.com idea (and I use it myself, often) is that you won't find the onvia price, which is lower than the pricewatch prices. Always use resellerratings, as Mday mentioned.

Okay....I bought one thru Onvia...the kds AV-195TF. They'll be shipping it from Dallas which is 6 hours from me....just do not know exactly when, because of the holiday. Followed Pariah's cashback advice too. So, with no tax, free shipping at 10% cash back...grand total was $360.00. WOOHOO...I am sooooo excited....

I want to thank each and everyone of you for your help and how nice you have been to me during my first flight in the HW Forum. I have learned several new things, and look forward to learning more.

Come see me in OT...

i have a KDS 195-TF and it is great.
you won't be disappointed.

2 things I noticed:

Buttons- too small, and I have small fingers.
Heat- A lot of heat on top vents but not too bad

But the Menu is great, more options in the Digital Menu then the Sony has, it is true according to a review I read.

Also, the auto calibration is only 1 button hit. Press the button 2 times in a row and it is all calibrated. Better than navigating through a stupid menu, for that common need.

Also, the box says 1900x1440 rez is supported at I think 75z or so. Not posistive on hz.

I installed the drivers from kdsusa.com and 1600 is the max there.

weird, but it can support 1900x1440. It is in the manual.

From what I hear KSD support beats the socks off Sony, so even though off-brand might brake down more, they replace it with no hassle and free shipping.

KDS all the way.

Very smart Princess! I can't see how you could get a better monitor for the money.

Did you use one of the $25 coupons? If not, email Onvia, and see if they will apply it retroactively.

re: Samsung 900NF

I know of two people who just purchased Samsung 900NF monitors from Onvia, and they both sent them back due to geometry problems that could not be resloved via the OSD. (on screen display).

If you're lucky you might get a decent monitor the first try, if not you may have to send it back until you get one with little to no geometry problems.

Personally speaking, I've been thinking of purchasing either the Samsung 900NF or the Viewsonic PF790. I've been going around to different shops and viewing both monitors for the last few days. I've looked at about a half-dozen now, just to be sure. Both monitors have their pro's and cons. The Viewsonic PF790 has rich vivid colors, but the text is not as sharp as the Samsung. The Samsung 900NF has nice text, but I noticed geometry problems on 2 of the 4 900NF's that I viewed in person, and this was at their factory defaults. The samsung was very crisp yet I found the colors to be a bit flat. The Viewsonic had much more vivid colors than the Samsung for sure. Only 1 of the 3 Viewsonics that I viewed had geometry problems that I could tell.

Don't forget, you can't correct all geometry problems via the on screen display. Some are just screwed up from the factory and no matter how much you try to correct them, nothing can be done and they have to be returned.

Rudee, there was probably nothing wrong with the monitors your friends sent back. The problem was most likely they had been using standard monitors before the 900NF and were not used to the flat screen. If you've never used a flat screen monitor they often look extremely concave, even though they aren't. Most of us have been using convex tubes for so long, that our eyes have been fooled into thinking they are flat. The first time I looked at a flat screen, I thought the geometry was completely off. All the lines appeared to be bowing towards the center of the monitor. However, if you took a sheet of paper and lined up the edge on a line, you would see it was actually perfectly straight.

every flat screen monitor will have geometry problem, since the flat
screen technology is not yet perfected.
So the question is how bad is the problem ? this varies from
one monitor to another.

Actually, they were screwed monitors. Onvia sent replacements 4 days later and the one who has already received his replacement monitory says the problem is not apparent in the replacement monitor, thus he is happy now.

<< every flat screen monitor will have geometry problem, since the flat >>

This statement is not entirely true. The Samsung 955DF has a very good screen when it comes to geometry. It's the other issues that bothered me when I had one.
