I am looking at getting either one of these 2 panels,

panasonic pv80

saming 46a550

Which one do you guys recommend. I know the panasonic is 720p only but I am in India so HD content will be very limited anyway (except BR). Which TV will be best suited for SD content and DVD upscaling (using a good upsacling HD player) and occasional gaming.

Edit: Also looking at this panel samsung 50" plasma

Plasma is vastly superior for SD content. If a majority of your viewing is SD, that's the way to go.

Wow, that could not be any more wrong, since the display type has no bearing on the content being viewed. A blanket statement like that is just ridiculous in so many ways. There is absolutely nothing inherent about plasmas that makes them better for SD, or anything about LCD's that makes them worse.

A good scalar is what is needed to make SD content look good and Panasonic and Samsung both use good scalars in their TV's. Since the plasma is 720p it will make the scaling much easier to accomplish, probably making it look a bit better, although the extra 4 inches will expose more flaws. Still the Samsung being a bit smaller with an equally good scalar will not be very far behind when it comes to the SD viewing experience.

OP, do you think you will be hooking up a PC to this TV at any point? If so then without question you want the Samsung LCD. If you plan to watch mostly TV/Movies and do not intend to do a ton of daytime viewing in a really bright room, then the Plasma will look better on pretty much everything but Blu-Ray (since it cannot take full advantage). Also 4 inches is nothing to laugh about either.

Thanks for the reply. If I go with the panny plasma will connecting a HTPC occasionally cause any issues. I understand the IR issues with plasma but the TV will be only turned on when I need to watch movies from the HTPC and wont be left running over an extended period of time.

Btw the PV80 is same as the PX80 (minus the hdtv tuner) which is a well regarded model
