I googled and found nothing. all reviews of 970 are with reference 290s, even the anadtech one. I want to see 970 vs 290 tri x or windforce. the reason I want to know is for the last few days, the price of 290 windforce has dropped to 270$ the tri x is now 290$ after mib.

Help me out please.

edit: I basically want to see reviews that pits the best of the 970 vs the best of 290.

The R9 290 Tri-X has a pretty mild overclock (+50MHz) compared to say the Gigabyte G1 970 Gaming (~150MHz) so best vs best I think the 970 is slightly faster.

Stock R9 R290 < Stock 970 < Aftermarket R9 290 < Aftermarket 970.

I'd love to see 2x Tri-X @1150MHz vs 2x 970 @1400MHz and see the results.

The R9 290 wins on price but loses on power consumption.

Sorry I couldn't help you out with a relevant review.

I don't know of any, but for now until someone post one (if there is one)you can look at Anandtech BM's in AT's review of the custom Tri-X 290 oc and see how it is close to the AMD reference 290x in AT's BM's per link below. Then just look at Anandtechs EVGA GTX FTW 970 and compare it to the AMD 290X reference card BM's in that review. The custom Tri-X 290 in AT's review of the Tri-X 290 is close in those BM's to the reference 290x but mostly just under the 290x performance. So just look at the EVGA GTX 970 FTW BM charts and compare it to the 290X reference BM. This is as close as I can get you to what you want to know and should actually be a close comparison on what your asking imo.

The EVGA GTX 970 FTW core clock is 1216 and the Gigabyte G1 GTX 970 Gaming core clock is 1228, so these two cards should be very close in performance.

I have 2 watercooled Sapphire Tri-X 290s in my rig below. 1100/1500 was doable but not sure above that!

took your advice and compare the graphs in both reviews. for some reason, in the 970 review, the reference 290 are doing better than tri x oc BMs in the old review. something is different. it is why I kinda want the review for 3 best 970 vs 3 best 290 cards. as of right now. I am thinking of picking up a 290 windforce. at 270$ it is 100$ cheaper than a factory oced 970, it's a very good deal atm if the fps are about the same(within 5 fps).

Drivers have improved performance on Hawaii a lot since release reviews. My point is still valid if you want to compare current reviews, a custom R290 at 1ghz is going to perform very close (or even faster) to reference R290X in uber mode (depends on conditions if it throttles or not).

doesn't reference 290x in uber mode = 100% guarantee throttling when under full load?

Only with a reference cooler...that is what the OP is saying...it's hard to find a real comparison of aftermarket cards only comparing overclock settings vs overclock settings.

Sadly over the last few years, GPU reviews are only geared toward selling the latest GPU's with factory overclocks that they are featuring in the review (ie: trying to sell)....
and making it look as good as possible VS the competition running at stock clocks. (both AMD and Nvidia GPU reviews)

These reviews are no longer geared toward helping the consumer make the best purchasing decisions..... they are geared toward selling the latest hardware being reviewed only......as a matter of fact , I'd go so far as to say that they make direct comparisons as difficult as possible for the consumer.....be it with different drivers.....settings or whatever.

So you've gotta do a lot of digging and comparing, being careful to not miss anything different in the hardware setups, game settings / options / drivers or whatever when comparing reviews/performance to get any real useful info for the consumer looking to find the best bang for his buck anymore.

LOL, you can't use profanity in the Video card & Graphics forum here....no matter how true your statement is.
So it's best to edit that so you don't get an infraction.
Don't worry, we'll all still know what you meant and agree with it.

Boozzer, if your going to overclock I would go with the Tri-X 290 for the Hynix memory and the Tri-X cooler for cooling the GPU and vrms. The Gigabyte cooler is not one of the better coolers in this regard when overclocking from what I remember reading (imo) from reviews awhile back. If your not going to overclock and that $270.00 Gigabyte is the one clock (most likely) at 947 keep in mind this card will be a little slower than the 290 Tri-X at stock speeds out of the box.

Look up kitguru iirc they had custom cards tested.

Yes they have the Gigabyte Windforce r9 290, but i believe the do their testing at settings they feel give the best usable performance not standard settings that you can compare across cards. They also don't always provide all resolutions people would play at. ie they might only test a game @ 4k.

http://www.kitguru.net/components/g...r9-290-windforce-oc-review-1600p-ultra-hd-4k/

Guru3d has the Gigabyte Windforce R9 290X, Gigabyte 970 G1, and Gigabyte 980 G1 gaming reviews. If you want the Windforce R9 290 performance it's ~5% less.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-980-g1-gaming-review,1.html

When one wins it's often not close. For instance the AMD card is 31 FPS faster than the 970 G1 and 10fps faster than the 980 G1 in BF4 @ 1600x1200. @ 1900x1200 its 25fps faster than the 970 G1 and 7fps faster than the 980 G1. In Bioshock infinite the Nvidia cards are faster.

TL;DR depending on the game, one or the other wins just like usual. AMD is by no means getting dominated aftermarket vs aftermarket.

tri x 98 vs g1 103 is 5 fps difference. I think this just convinced me to spend 20$ more to go with tri x.

I don't really mind oc ability, I would rather lose 5 fps if I can lower the fan noise. it is one of the reasons why never bought a reference 290. But when it comes to performance for my dollars, I care. 80$ less, 27% of the price of a 290$ tri x, 970 G1 can kiss my behind. and I best I can oc the tri x a lil bit without raising the noise of the fans.

thanks alot everyone. I think I am gonna buy the 290 tri x for 290$ on new egg, HA 290 for a 290 . thanks for the help. that hardware fr website really helped out. again thanks.

My 290s on the reference cooler +55% fan run 1ghz/1250 at 88c Full Mining Load. Gaming I can drop the fan to 48% no throttle. I am sure custom coolers are even better.

If I had to choose I'd go with two 970's. But for the price and especially if you do 1440p-4k with Dual cards, amd might be a better fit.

for the same price, anyone of us would choose 970. but 27% cheaper for almost the same performance, the difference is literally less than 5%. I would 100% go with 290 tri x every time.

I had a bad experience with amd and a 280x here recently and as much as I'd like to get a 290 or 290x I'm worried I'd have the same issues again with flickering and the card shutting down so I just feel better about getting nvidia
