Looking for a basic unlocked GSM phone

During my upcoming overseas travel, I would like to use a local SIM card with a GSM phone (900/1800 bands). ATA&T refuses to unlock my Samsung Galaxy S3 because I have not had it for two years yet.

Could you recommend a few online resources from where I could buy a basic, unlocked GSM phone (handset) that will accept a standard SIM card? I don't want to have to spend too much on it. My budget is about $50. (Less would be even better.)

Their website. Usually $10, sometimes $1 or free depending on sale pricing.

You can also get super-cheap SIMs for Simple Mobile (T-Mo MVNO) and other non-AT&T carriers on eBay. They will do just as well.

edit: Don't forget to install an APN app like Tweakker before you go.

I think they give you $5 when you sign up to try the service for free. internet won't work, only talk and text. you shouldn't have to pay anything to try the service/ activate the Sim card.

You don't need to activate the card, and you shouldn't. You're just testing to see whether it pops up an "enter unlock code" prompt or not. If not, your unlock worked.

Yeah, it wouldn't be too hard to unlock yourself. No need to buy a new phone. That being said, Tigerdirect will have the lumia 520 on sale for $59.99 on Black Friday.

Hi,

Actually the process is very easy, you just need to know the codename of your model (for S3 I think is I9300... but make sure of that), then introduce your phone's IMEI , select your region and finally request your unlock code.
