My mom doesn't make much I'm surprised she has more saved up than I do which isn't a good thing. But she gets child support and doesn't have student loans so that helps.

She doesn't want to get her a sports car. She told me she will get whatever car we find for her. Which is how it should be. Something to take her to an from class next year and work.

A ~2001 Corolla for ~$3-4000 fits the bill nicely. In that price range you're likely to find a clean car that'll last several years without need for anything but regular maintenance. Gas mileage is fantastic, 5-6MPG better than current Civics and Corollas.

Oh man I forgot about the s2000. She already rear ended someone with my mom's car a month or two back. But she won't listen to me or my mom. I keep trying to tell her that the cars she wants like the infinity with high mileage are no good for a teen and cost a lot to repair. I have a good salary and can't afford an infinity lol.

I'm fairly certain a s2000 is a terrible car for a teenage driver that just recently rear ended someone. It's light weight, relatively high powered, and can be a handful if you get it into the wrong situation.

I think my mother has not let her driver her car since the accident. I've been taking her to work on weekends in the morning and her friends drive when they want to go somewhere. But she needs something for school soon. I hate shopping for cars. They always want to drive for hours when it comes to looking at vehicles. My mother knows nothing about buying a vehicle so I'm trying to find something local before making long trips.

I do know someone with an auction license so I'll also give that guy a call.

Get her something for $2k, save the other 6k in case of repairs or she wrecks and needs a new beater. Getting a teenager something nice doesn't really do anything for them; a nice car is one of life's luxuries that you should let them build up to -- when you gift to them it gives them much further to go before they can improve on what they've been given.

Seriously, $8k is more than the KBB of my fully loaded low-mile 2004 Grand Prix GTP Comp G. If I had had that as a teen rather than driving around in a '92 Grand Voyager, a '90 Plymouth Sundance, and a '92 Firebird V6, I never would have been able to appreciate the monumental improvements in handling, power, and comfort of the vehicles that followed.

My first, and current car is a civic with the ex trim. IMO, it was a perfect first car. It looks nice, gets ~35 mpg with my conservative driving, and hasn't needed any major repairs in the 50k miles I've put on it.

Hate to get all nostalgic, but my first car was "out of my league" as well. I was happy to get an interest free loan from my dad for an '84 Toyota Cressida. Such RWD refinement was wasted on a driver like me. I loved the silky smooth 5M, and Tiara leather coachwork, but it was not to be.

That car set my father back a cool $1500, back in '98.

I think I talked her into a Honda civic. Contacted a few people to see if the cars are still available. Price ranging from $8500 maybe I can haggle for 8k and this one model in particular has 67k miles.

Edit: looks like that Honda has a rebuilt title. Not sure about these things. I don't think it's a good idea generally.

Thank god, get her a fucking civic. (COMPLETELY STOCK) DO NOT GET A SI. If your sister is as stupid as she sounds (And she sounds real stupid), she could spend a small fortune trying to rice it out and then be another civic si douche.

Otherwise, convince her that a motorcycle is really the way to go. Better fuel economy and faster than any car she'll ever be able to purchase. Just have her let it rip on a hayabusa (Turbobusa if you can find one). Darwin will take care of the rest.

I get the impression she's looking for prestige more than actual handling or power. This certainly would take care of things though.

Yea she wants to have a nice cool car just like all her friends who have rich parents. Too bad, she's not getting one. She isn't into modding and tricking out cars so all she cares about is how it looks.

I keep telling her a high mileage car is not so good and that neither my mother or I will have money left to spend on fixing it but I think she is just excited to have a car so who knows.

I'm going to take her to see the Honda with 67k miles.

Is a rebuilt title a big issue if the car was fixed up to stock and has no issues, already inspected.

It really depends... In general, I would stay away from any with rebuilt titles. You will have a really hard time selling it if there is an issue.

Yea seems like a lot of those Hondas with rebuilt titles in my area. I guess it depends on what happened to it.

What happened is that they were damaged to such an extent that they needed a branded title. I would stay away.

Hmm, a good car for a teen.

1976 Vega, unless they can start working and pay for their own.

We bought a car for our son when he turned 16. It was "upgraded" to a little nicer looking of a car. I sold it just a couple weeks ago. Rocker panel on the driver's side was rotted out. Trunk had a lot of scratches from pushing it out of my way with the tractor. Clear coat on the hood was all bubbly and flaking off. BUT, it ran like a champ, was maintained, had good brakes, good tires, inside was very clean. I sold it for well under $1k. THAT was a perfect car for a teen getting a car that they don't pay for, and that's exactly what the couple who bought it were using it for - their teen daughter just got her license. In their words, "if she doesn't like how it looks, she can pay for her own car."

Also, since your sister is going to college, there are many colleges that don't allow freshmen to have cars. Others make the freshmen park a significant distance from the dorms. And, for good reason. Students do not need a car at college.

But anyway, you were looking for type of car advice; I'd go with cheaper than 8k for a budget. Most important: mechanically sound & safe. Less important: how it looks. Besides, if it's a car your sister is "embarrassed" to be seen in, she won't be the one at college stuck giving everyone else rides all over.

She got in to some good schools but with my my mother's low salary she didn't get enough aid to cover everything and would have to pay out of pocket around 5-6k a year which is not bad. Hell I wish I had that type of aid when I went to school but at the time my parents were not divorced so I had to take out loans.

I told her to go to community for 2 years then transfer to a good nursing school so that is what I think she is doing. The college allows cars. I advised this as I told her paying back loans is no fun and if she does it this way she can work while in school.

What sucks is she kept complaining that my dad bought me a nice shiny sports car when I was in college, despite it having 114k miles on it, and that now that my parents are split it's not fair because she has no one to help her. My dad actually asked me to pay him back for that car like 2 years ago. He doesn't talk to her much and I don't really talk to him either so it is what it is.

Best thing is not to rush and I'm just continuing looking for civics or scions because she won't start until fall I believe.

Problem is all her rich friends her age have nice cars and she wants the same. I feel bad for her but nothing you can do. .

You are doomed. Run away.

If your saying civic and she's saying G35 there is going to be some conflict. Mom's money, little sister's grand plans, and your reality. Trifecta of butthurt.

Well it's mom's money and most likely mine too when it will come to repairs or anything else so she's going to get either a scion or civic. The civic she likes is still for sale but the guy only emailed me about it still being available.

I've asked if we can see it and they didn't get back to me. I hate dealing with craigslist sometimes.

Don't cheaper cars usually have over 100k in miles? I grew up in a family with only used and older cars with high mileage. Every month was spent on some type of maintenance or issue. I want something that will last her through college.

Generally speaking, yes. Age can also do damage. 100k miles isn't a big deal if the car is not abused and/or they're highway miles.

I picked out a 2002 Saturn SL2 for my mother-in-law about a year and a half ago, with ~130k miles, for $2300. Those particular cars have a reputation for high maintenance needs, but the car itself was in amazing shape considering its age. She has put 40,000 miles on it since then and the only maintenance done on it has been oil changes.

Craigslist is a crapshoot but can yield the best cars for the least money. Gotta be patient and kick alot of tires. You've got some time until fall so enjoy a summer of car shopping.

I'd stick to the civics. The tc's have slightly higher costs and risks associated with them. Tc's gas mileage is lower, tires cost more, insurance is a bit higher, and they are more prone to being beat on.

Agreed, although I have plans to go places this summer for a business meeting/venture with some friends so I want to get this done as soon as I can. This way I won't need to take her to work every weekend.
