playing against a computer is so much harder then a person. the reason being is hat computer chess games have algorithms that can do checkmate in x ammount of moves and hardly ever make mistakes. but anyway, just go to www.download.com and type in chess, any one of them are fine. i personally use the version called "Pawn 2"

I just now sent Pawn Chess to you by e-mail.

It's a great little free app that I've enjoyed for years.

Go into Selection / Options / Level and set it to Beginner. Then move the slider for ErrorLevel toward the right so that the computer will tend to make more errors & give you a chance of winning occasionally as you learn. You've got to win sometimes in order to stay motivated.

since i have vista, chess titans is included with it.

chessmaster is also a good one. it literally takes months and years to beat it on the highest difficulty.

FICS ( Free Internet Chess Club) is an online chess club thats free. The atmosphere can be kind of rough at times. I usually go on FICS if I want to play bughouse. ICC (internet chess club) is one of the larger online chess clubs though it requires an annual subscription fee. The atmosphere is very friendly. I happen to play on ICC and its very receptive to players of all levels. There are bots for all strengths and lectures, professional games being broadcasted and analyzed, etc. etc.

I have tried both Chessmaster and Kasparov and personally much prefer Kasparov. Like almost all of the chess softwares, you can choose the level of play. The greatest weakness of Kasparov is a strong tendency to play the same opening at a given level. I would prefer a software that randomly chose among the stronger openings, but it opens up play in the middle game. As best I can figure "level of play" equates to the horizon -- how far ahead it does an exhaustive search -- so it is possible to set a trap at the low levels, but not levels near or above 2000 (for me at any rate). I also like the Stanton board in 3D which is much more realistic than any of the choices offered by Chessmaster.

I e-mailed it to you, but I don't have any legal rights to host it for others to d/l, nor to distribute it. I sent it to you strictly non-commercial, free, friend-to-friend. It's not mine to distribute.

The game used to have its own url, but that seems to be defunct.

ANYBODY ELSE: If you want the game, ask splintitan or Molondo, not me.

Go into Selections /Options /Level & set the level to Beginner,
then move the Error Level slider toward the right.

If you don't,
you have no chance to win, & you'll lose every time before you know what happened.

if you know how to play chess well enough put the slider all the way to the left, i think giving the computer more time makes it harder...

Anyone remember "Battle Chess" or whatever it was? Where the pieces would attack each other? I think it was for an old Commodore 64...
