Refabbing T61p thinkpad right now.

Going to install a new OS.

I've used Ubuntu before. It's okay, but there's something I don't quite like about it. Can't put a finger on it.

Any interesting linux distros out there? I prefer all in one packages so I don't have to hunt down and type some obscure command line commands to get stuff compiled, etc.

By creative do you mean it has all of the design apps by default or the distro itself is the product of creativity?

If you fear the command line, Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS is are probably your safest bets.

I installed Fuduntu and I'm liking it a lot. It's kind of like a mix between windows and the mac. It's pretty darn good.

Any tips on it? One problem I'm trying to figure out is how to get the trackpoint working on this thing.

I was going to recommend Fuduntu.

Its still pretty young, so the best thing to do for help like that would be to hit up their forum or IRC. Depending on time of day, IRC response might take a while, but most of the Fuduntu team hangs out in there.

I like Linux Mint.

But I'm going to try Fuduntu just for fun this weekend.

My T61 runs Ubuntu 64bit without a hiccup.

IMHO Ubuntu is still the best compromise of support, ease of use, and funcitonality in the linux distro world. Some distros have it beat in those respective categories (ie. Mint is pretty much king of user-friendly now), but if you consider all those things at once, it's really no contest. In other words, I would give Ubuntu (I actually prefer Unity now, but KDE was my old mainstay) another chance.

I just loaded Manjaro ... it is a distribution based on Arch Linux. They now have a graphical installer and the installation went very easy for me. They also have built in ability to check the software and update to the latest version as needed. It is also a rolling release which is nice. You can use the software from the Arch AUR. So far, I like it a lot!

Linux Mint Mate 14 can't go wrong.

Mint is basically Ubuntu without Unity. It ships with plenty of different desktop environments, I like KDE myself. The beauty of free operating systems is that you get to try them out, see if you like them, no loss. Using them in VirtualBox makes it super-easy if you have the RAM and the disk space.

I just tried mint 15 w/ cinnamon for the first time. Had it tweaked to my liking (even optimus is working) in 2 hours flat. Happiest I've been with a distro since gnome2 on ubuntu 10.04. Highly recommended
