Looking for a database programmer

I posted this about a month ago and some people suggested i just use Quickbooks. I gave Quickbooks Premier a shot and it didn't do half the things i wanted it to! I'm currently waiting for my trial disk with Quickbooks Contractor, but they shipped it two weeks ago, and it still hasn't arrived. So in all likelyhood, i'll need someone here to code this for me. I was told that this can be done in either php/mysql or vb/access. I don't particularly need remote access, but if the price is reasonable, i'll definitely consider php/mysql. So what i need you guys to do is give me a ballpark price of how much this would cost and how long you would need to do it.

This database will be used to manage contracts, estimates and business relationships at a sub-contracting company. Here's a brief summary of how things work around here. A company, say Citibank decides to build a new branch. They hire an architect to draw up the plans. The architect sets up a tender process, which allows a handful of general contractors to bid on the job. Say the tender opens on March 1 and closes on May 1st. On March 1, the general contractors get the plans and specs and start calling sub-contractors for different trades to get quotes from bits and pieces of the job.

Then they put the whole thing together, throw in the profit, and send their bid in to the architect on May 1st. May 1st is called 'closing day' and it's the last day i can submit a bit to them, and they can submit a bid to the architect. Several weeks or months later, the architect announces which general contractor got the job, and at this point i follow up with them and start negotiating. Now, imagine having to do a few of these projects weekly and you'll have some idea of what a colossal headache it is to keep track!

So what i need is a database to document everything. I need detailed files and full history on architects and general contractors. When i load up an architect profile, i want to know which tenders are currently open, which closed, which were awarded and so on. I want to be able to see who's bidding on each, click a general contractor name and see what other projects they're bidding on. And which ones they've bid on in the past. Which ones they've won. And how my bids did. So i need it to connect everything and everyone so that it all makes sense!

Just a quick note: When I said VB/Access that was just the first coding platform that came to mind when writing a Windows app like the one you want with expedience in mind. It is no the be-all and end-all of potential solutions.

sounds like a bit of work, i would imagine it take 30-40 hour man hours which includes testing and requirements changing (they always do)

I historically underestimate the amount of work hours needed. I'd trust Ameesh's time estimates over my own.

yeah, i'd say hes underestimating by a lot. but it really depends on what kind of features and reporting you want. i havent read your original thread (where ever that is to know more details)

dont get me wrong it could be done in 20 but it probably wouldnt be polished nor would it really be feature rich. it could probably be done in a weekend if you really wanted it fast. but again i dont know all the detailed requirements, like would want to have a reminder system that nags you to make sure you submit a project before the deadline or maybe you would like to have reports that tell you how successfull you are when bidding with a paticular firm or in general, there is alot of stuff you can do, all the nice little extras take time.

In all honesty, Ameesh's estimate is probably the closest.

Oops, I misread the original post. I just revamped my project timeline and I can have it done in definitely no more than 4 minutes, including a full front end.

*EDIT* Finished. Let me know where you want it uploaded.

It would help if you look for some one locally that do Access because it is easier to talk to someone one on one & Access is a quick & dirty way to do things.

Write down all necessary steps that your business do in a day to day paper work operation. Collect every forms, invoice, estimate, letter, etc head that your company use, because it will help the coder on developing what you need.

The actual database can be done relatively quickly if you have knowledgeable person in your company working with the DBA & answers his/her needs. And, aided with the information that you have collected above will save you some time & money.

80-90% of the time in database development is spending on communicating with the client on what their business need are.
5% on actual database development.
5-15% on bug fix.

A slap together package could be done in 20-40 hours depending on how detailed you want.

A working prototype could be available within 10 hours work.

You will need to invest about 10 hours of time into properly defining the specs.
Otherwise figure that every change that you ask for will cost between 0.5 and 2 hours of billable time.

If you want a professional job, expect that it will cost some $$$ for both labor costs and proper project effort.
A proper delivered project on a contract will cost about 25% more than the actual development.

Some on these forums may be true independent developers vs. hackers or part time/free running programmers.
You may wish to put the project out for bid either here or in your local newpaper.
Ask for some samples of previous work / and or documentation

I'm going to be a glutton and say I would bid no less than 60, but I would probably come in under the estimate (a better position than over). If you contact any local consulting companies I believe you'll find that all of the estimates provided here, including the 60 hours, are pretty conservative. If you're on a budget it might be valuable for you to employ a six-degrees-of-separation methodology in finding talent; in other words, find the friend of a cousin's friend's brother's friend's dad who would be willing to take on such a project as a learning experience. It will take longer, and it won't echo the same professionalism that a more costly solution would (although you never know), but you'll get more functionality for your dollar.

The only reason I even recommend the above is because I have bidded on an unfathomable number of smaller projects like that, and they almost always employ the methodology described above for a cheaper solution.

My tupence.
