Looking for a game (Space Sim)

I am an avid fan of the entire Wing Commander series, and I am really missing playing a good space sim.
Thus, I am hoping that someone on these boards can help me.

I am looking for a 3...0 year old space sim, single player, with cutscenes (in-game engine or pre-rendered), that is very story driven, and played with a joystick.

I did play Descent:Freespace 1, and I liked it, but didn't love it. I played the demo of StarLancer, and it was nice, but not great - can somebody tell me if the game is better than the demo?

Privateer (6 years old) was a great sim based on Wing Commander universe. Freelancer will supposedly be a similar game. StarLancer is also based in the same universe, but it's more mission driven. In freelancer and privateer you were more free in choosing your mission, kinda like rpg but without some rpg elements.

The demo for freespace 2 was great, and the reviews were positive, but I haven't found anyone selling it. It might be in some "shovelware" bundle (if so, please post the name) otherwise you'd have to try eBay.

Tachyon: the fringe had OK reviews, another Privateer-type game.

But WC 1 - 2 and the expansions did set the standard for story-driven space sims. I'll have to give my unplayed copy of WC: Prophecy a try after I finish Dungeon Siege.

freespace 2 is very good. old game, but the graphics are still very good, and gameplay is excellent.

another one is idependence war 2: edge of chaos, another excellent space sim, with rpg incorporated.

Look for X Beyond the Frontier it's a little week but hey it is a 4 year old space sim and actually I've put in over 100 hours of it in the past month, it has alot of trading and building in order to get credits to buy upgrades, and moderate story line. If your looking for a space sim to finish in a week don't look at this one. They released an add-on for it called X-Tention, you can get both in the gold version. Also look for X2 The Threat by eggosoft it should go gold in March, it's an offline space sim. I also just saw that Freelancer has finally gone Gold but that's online.

Argo - I did play Privateer 1+2... Good suggestion
I may really start to look at Star Lancer - I like mission driven games. Freelancer will be played with the mouse (uughh), tried that with Earth and Beyond and hated it.

LongCoolMother: Can I play IWar2 w/o having played the first one? Will I miss a lot?

Actually, I just found out that you can buy the German version of X-Gold still. Since I do speak German too, I may give it a try (it's only $12)

I'm also a old class Sim fan and have been missing those games, so whenever I see a game that could remotely be a Space Sim, I buy it!

Check out Freespace 2, Tachyon: The Fringe (Demo), X-Wing Alliance, Star Wars Starfighter, Aquanox (Underwater "flying"), Starlancer.

The upcoming Freelancer seems to be good, like Starlancer but with privateer aspects allowing for various paths of play.
